[Leadership Lens: 1 year in the making]
In 2023, I was blessed to receive a small PPA Grant from Euphrates Institute. With 10 of my friends, we were able to bring an experiential workshop on empathy, gender equality, and conflict resolution. We believe that these three values are integral in nurturing peace. We tested, refined, and measured our impact on 120 Student Council members across middle schools in Jakarta, Indonesia. This is how we do it:
💫 Empathy
Utilizing River of Life ♒ , students share with their small groups their achievements and challenges.
By writing the poem "I am.." ✍ , students share what makes them "them" without relying on grades, social status, or financial situation.
✨ Conflict Resolution
Utilizing role-playing activities 🎭 , students could decide "what happens next" in this real-time drama, led by facilitators
⚽ Gender Equality
With our gender-mixed futsal games, students are challenged to break down stereotypes about girls and women, improve their confidence, and nurture collaboration
Reflections from participants include:
👦 "This is the first time I see girls in my class as smart and reliable!"
👧 "This is the first time I play soccer with the boys! I feel encouraged and more confident!"
🏫 "Let's stop excluding the quiet girl from our class. What if she is having problems at home?"
🙌 "Can we please have more sessions?"
Even though we planned to close our initiative after it reached 5 schools, we kept improving our workshop design and M&E mechanisms. Now, we have a Instructional Design (Desain Pelatihan), led and supported by Haniyo S.. With this knowledge product, we are excited to get this toolkit and How-Tos out in the world and get as many people to nurture youth leaders in their communities. True to our belief, everyday people--just like you and me--are capable of building, supporting, and nurturing peace leadership.
With great support from exceptional volunteers, we are now launching leadershiplens.id under Sedikit-Sedikit Belajar where we will post our wins and lessons learned, and build communities of leaders, mentors, and practitioners, committed to peace leadership.
