Updates

  • The Next Generation Infrastructure programme at the John Innes Centre (JIC) and The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) aims to create the largest net zero carbon laboratory in the UK, in line with the UK Net Carbon Zero Buildings Standard. Based at the Norwich Research Park, this state-of-the-art facility will supercharge the institute’s ability to translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions, while sharing knowledge, facilities, networks and experience. Our design features a combination of research and office spaces alongside modern horticulture facilities and glasshouses, all connected by a central public outreach gallery. Professor Graham Moore, Director at John Innes Centre said "The Next Generation Infrastructure will enable us to be at the very cutting edge of plant and microbial research. In addition to the new laboratories, the design includes a redevelopment of our plant growth facilities, which in conjunction with our existing field station, will improve our ability to study the effects of climate change.” Read more about this design story here: https://bit.ly/4hqiJQb #NextGenerationInfrustructureProgramme #DesignStory #NetZero

  • Every year 120,000 new people call the Toronto region home, challenging the city’s ability to keep up. In our latest The Good City paper, Sean Hertel, MES, MCIP, RPP of Hertel Planning and BDP Quadrangle 's Harim Labuschagne, explore not if the city should grow, but how growth can enhance urban life. They examine ways to harness growth for a more resilient, inclusive Toronto - balancing density, infrastructure, and affordability. • Further to BDP's and 日本工営株式会社 (Nippon Koei) MoU with Lviv City at URC Berlin 2024, and as part of the UK's commitment to improving Ukraine's infrastructure, we are partnering with Gleeds and PwC to support the transformation of Lviv, in western Ukraine, into a key transport hub for Europe. Our work will involve scoping priority infrastructure projects for development that will connect Lviv with European transport networks, which include establishing a transport hub and the potential for an integrated transit-oriented development (TOD). Supported by Lviv’s Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and British Minister Mike Kane, this initiative aims to enhance healthcare access through better intermodal connections and promote sustainable economic growth by improving public transport links for residents via bus, rail, and tram, ultimately positioning Lviv as Ukraine’s most connected city to the European Union. #TransformationofLviv #InfrastructureRedevelopment #Ukraine

Earlier this week, we celebrated the relaunch of the Coventry & Warwickshire Society of Architects (CWSA) with a fantastic event hosted at Coventry University’s Delia Derbyshire Building. Attendees enjoyed an insightful guided tour led by Shaun Hides, Dean of the College of Arts & Society and Dr Tulika Gadakari, Curriculum Lead in Architecture, followed by a presentation from Svetlana Solomonova, Architect Director at BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd), on optimising renovation and the design process behind this incredible project. The Delia Derbyshire Building, designed by BDP’s education team, unites the former Graham Sutherland and Maurice Foss buildings with a dynamic new extension, offering cutting-edge equipment and creative spaces. This landmark project, shortlisted for the RIBA West Midlands Awards, is a beacon of innovation, strengthening Coventry’s connection to the university and inspiring the next generation of architects. As an RIBA West Midlands branch, CWSA fosters architectural excellence and community engagement, providing valuable support to students and emerging professionals through events, knowledge sharing, and networking. We extend our thanks to Altro Limited for kindly providing refreshments and to all who attended and supported the event! 📅 Upcoming Event: Join us for the RIBA West Midlands Awards Ceremony on 1st May 2025 at the Indian Brewery to celebrate outstanding architectural achievements, including the Delia Derbyshire Building. 🔗 Book your place here: https://lnkd.in/e4P6Fc-7. • Branding is more than just a logo or a colour palette. It defines who you serve, how you make them feel, and what makes you different. In August 2023, we set out to refresh BDP’s brand, which had served us well but no longer reflected who we are today. Over the last year and a half have been hard at work making this a reality. Our new brand idea, ‘Built Original’ is inspired by our history as the original multidisciplinary house of design. Built Original isn’t just our tagline, it’s our mindset. It reflects our pioneering origins and our modern ingenuity. Our new geo-responsive website showcases the breadth of our expertise, adapts to regional markets, and celebrates the diversity of our people and their talents. It’s the digital expression of our purpose to 'design a world that's built for good'. This brand is a promise, to our people, our clients, and the communities we serve. The countdown is on! Just a few weeks before Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club's new #fanzone opens its doors, and I can't wait. Designed and delivered by BDP Pattern, we've created something special for fans and visitors to American Express Stadium. 🎆 🏟️ Our #design features soaring tree-like columns and skylights that fill the space with light, wrap-around screens that bring colour and excitement, and top-notch food and bars to boot. 🍻 🍔 🕺 As a #Brighton resident, I'm so proud to have been involved in bringing this amazing new space to my city. Thank you to Peter Gray, Laura Collins, and Kieren Joanes at the Club for your support and brilliant #collaboration, and congratulations to my BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd) team Andrew Capewell, Adam Brennan, Paul Clarke, and Michelle Ng - your creativity and hard work over has brought this fantastic design into reality. 🙌 🙌 🙌 #stadiumdesign #stadiumarchitecture

On Friday we announced that The Terrace, the new fan experience at American Express Stadium, will officially open on Tuesday 1 April for the club’s Premier League match against Aston Villa. 🤩 On a matchday it will be known as the Heineken Fan Zone at The Terrace – a brand-new digital sports bar experience that will be open for longer hours pre and post-match for supporters coming to the game. Acting as an indoor/outdoor space for up to 3000 people makes it the biggest in the Premier League. Heineken are extending their partnership as naming-rights holders of the matchday fan zone and working with the club to create a world-class fan experience pre and post-match. Richard Campbell, Trading Director at Heineken UK said: “We’re delighted to be expanding our sponsorship of Brighton & Hove Albion FC by partnering together to create the new Heineken Fan Zone. "Just like the team at the American Express Stadium we are always looking at how we can elevate the fan experience, and The Terrace will be the perfect place to do just that. "We’re looking forward to seeing supporters old and new enjoying our beers and ciders whilst celebrating an Albion matchday.” The opening of The Terrace, a multi-million-pound development, will complete the first phase of £40m worth of investment in a range of improvements across the site, aimed at improving the matchday experience for Albion supporters. What to expect on a matchday: American Express Clubhouse On the mezzanine level of the Heineken Fan Zone will be the American Express Clubhouse, available to all American Express® Cardmembers along with up tothree guests for each matchday (on a first-come, first-served basis) for fans wanting to immerse themselves in the matchday atmosphere. After the match, the Heineken Fan Zone and the American Express Clubhouse area will remain open for fans to socialise, watch the late kick-off or enjoy entertainment on the stage. Commenting on The Terrace, Aaron Burke, VP of Global Brand Sponsorships at American Express said: “We couldn’t be more excited to partner on The Terrace at the American Express Stadium™ and to extend our longstanding relationship with Brighton & Hove Albion FC. “We love nothing more than granting special access and creating unforgettable moments for our Cardmembers and for Albion fans. So, we are thrilled to be launching the American Express Clubhouse - a dedicated, elevated space for Amex® Cardmembers and their guests before and after every match on the upper level of the Heineken Fan Zone – to ensure that the matchday experience will be even better.”

  • The Entopia Building has won Project of the Year – Retrofit Workplaces and the prestigious Building Performance Champion award at the CIBSE Building Performance Awards. The judges hailed Entopia as a trailblazer for large commercial buildings moving towards net zero, demonstrating how deep retrofits can deliver exceptional performance on par with new builds. Achieving EnerPHit Classic, WELL Gold, and BREEAM Outstanding certifications, this project exemplifies how circular design, material reuse, and a fabric-first approach can redefine workplace sustainability. Lucy Townsend, Head of Sustainability at BDP, reflects on this achievement: “Entopia is proof that with ingenuity and collaboration, it is possible to achieve outstanding building performance while working within the constraints of a typical refurbishment budget.” With 48% bio-based materials, a 21,000kg CO2e reduction through reclaimed materials, and an operational strategy that prioritises user wellbeing while delivering an operation energy reduction in excess of 80% when compared to the pre-refurbishment performance, Entopia is setting a new benchmark for sustainable retrofit design. Congratulations to the entire project team and our partners for this well-deserved recognition! 👏 Find out more here: https://bit.ly/4hZ0jH6 Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) 3pm Project Management Max Fordham LLP Gardiner & Theobald LLP Architype #SustainableDesign #Retrofit #NetZero #BuildingPerformance #CircularEconomy #BDP
