My head has finally stopped spinning. I’m so proud to take home the Most Disruptive award at the WOMEN IN TECH ® Global Europe awards in Brussels last night, on behalf of all our incredible team of innovators at Chirp Amongst a group of incredibly accomplished nominees for this prestigious award, I am truly humbled and grateful to Lucyna Chwastowska from Amazon and the other jury members for recognising the valuable work we are doing to protect children from grooming, cyberbullying and self harm on smartphones. One of the more interesting measures announced by Paschal Donohue, the Irish government Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform in his Budget2025 delivery is the provision of €9m for the purchase of pouches for mobile phones for secondary school students. The €9m allocation is intended to minimise the use of mobile phones by students while they are attending school. Vast majority of American States support tobacco-style warning labels to be placed on social media platforms. Attorney Generals from 42 US States have urged the American Congress to pass regulation requiring warning labels to be placed on social media platforms warning of their potential risks to children. In a letter submitted to Congress earlier this week, the attorney generals wrote that the placement of tobacco-style surgeon general warning labels will bring attention to the “inherent risks” which social media platforms pose to children. US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy first proposed the warning labels in June this year as part of a plan to avert the “mental health crisis” affecting young people. Attorney generals from a significant majority of states, including New York, California, Florida, Oregon, Michigan, and others, are in support of the measure, saying the move would help “protect future generations of Americans.” All told, the letter is signed by 39 state AGs as well as the attorneys general of American Samoa, the District of Columbia, and the US Virgin Islands. #Chirp #Chirpfamily #Protectingchildrenonline Chirpfamily.com

Findings from a newly published report by CyberSafeKids, the Irish based online safety charity has revealed that 25% of children aged between 8-12yrs have been upset by harmful content which they have seen online. Additionally, the report found that 21% of children between the ages of 12-14yrs had similar negative experiences online, including encountering scams, harassment, horror, and sexual material. Published annually and titled “Trends and Usage Report 'Left To Their Own Devices' The report surveyed over 7,000 children in the academic year 2023-24 with findings such as: · The vast majority - 94% - of 8-12yr olds already have their own smart device with tablets (59%), gaming consoles (57%) and smartphones (49%) the three most popular devices respectively in this age group. · 42% of 8-12yr olds, and 62% of 12-14yr olds do not talk to their parents about their online activity. · For 8-12yr olds, feeling upset over online content most commonly occurred on YouTube (37%) and Roblox (23%). · For secondary school children (aged 12-14), Snapchat (41%) and TikTok (30%) were identified as the most common platforms where these negative experiences occur. · 55% of children aged 8 to 12 did not tell a parent when bothered, confused or upset by harmful content or unsolicited contact, rising to 63% for 12-14yr olds. #Chirp #Chirpfamily #Protectingchildrenonline Chirpfamily.com
