We are delighted that a CIEH expert member, Victor Ktorakis, spoke yesterday to the Institute of Licensing (IoL) National Training Conference about our work to promote better regulation of cosmetic procedures. Victor has been the lead for Special Treatments Licensing for the London Borough of Enfield for 15 years and is currently Co-Chair for the London Special Treatments Working Group. He emphasised the shared interests of CIEH and the IoL in supporting the proposed new England-wide licensing scheme for non-surgical cosmetic procedures, ensuring practitioners have appropriate training and qualifications and promoting consistency in standards and enforcement. He also highlighted current challenges around enforcement and the significance of the new enforcement guidance for body augmentation procedures (see here: https://bit.ly/3CwQ90z).

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported the first detected cases of Clade Ib mpox in the UK. It is a new strain which is fuelling a surge in infections in Africa. The first person to test positive developed flu-like symptoms after returning to London in late October, having recently travelled to countries in Africa that are seeing community cases of Clade Ib mpox. In early November, three additional cases were confirmed. All patients live in the same household. They are the first locally transmitted clade Ib mpox cases in the WHO European Region, and the first outside Africa since a Public Health Emergency of International Concern was declared for a second time in August 2024. At CIEH we are always keen to showcase the varied and rewarding career that working in Environmental Health offers. Therefore, we’re delighted that Naomi Shipman, Environmental Health Officer at Dartford Borough Council, has put pen to paper for us to talk about what attracted her to the profession and what her day-to-day role involves. This follows on from her and her team recently seizing 170kg of illegal meat products from Romania and Bulgaria amid growing concerns about African Swine Fever (ASF) being carried on such produce. CIEH’s first Water Quality Conference has been hailed a success with fascinating speakers covering topics from this year’s Devon Cryptosporidium outbreak to the issues around private water supply regulations. Dr Lincoln Sargeant, Director of Public Health and Dr Samuel Trethewey, Public Health Registrar, both from Torbay Council, led a session on the lessons learnt and the challenges that had to be overcome in the face of public and political pressures during the Cryptosporidium outbreak. Other highlights during the day were some engaging debates on the current confusion and potential future solutions around the regulatory framework for private water supplies, particularly Regulation 8, and an inspiring presentation on the charity founded by Environmental Health professionals, Water for Kids. Mark Elliott, President of CIEH, who opened and closed the event, said it was a “huge success thanks to the enlightening and engaging contributions of our speakers”. CIEH has published written evidence welcoming the Renters’ Right Bill but has expressed concern about the large enforcement burden that its provisions will impose on local authorities. This written evidence was developed through our Housing Advisory Panel and submitted to the House of Commons Public Bill Committee scrutinising the legislation. Mark Elliott, CIEH President, said it was “a substantial piece of work that will provide a very strong foundation for our further parliamentary activity around the Bill”. With the Local Government Association (LGA) ‘Make a Difference, Work for Your Local Council’ campaign in full swing we wanted to highlight the vital role Environmental Health teams within local authorities. The LGA campaign has been launched in response to the ongoing workforce challenges faced by local authorities, with nine out of ten councils across the UK struggling with staff recruitment and retention. Working in Environmental Health in local government offers an opportunity to make a real difference and make your community a safer, healthier and happier place to live and work – with a career that offers great benefits and flexible working. In this video, Environmental Health Officer Daniel talks about the difference he makes in his role and the flexibility and positive work/life balance he gets from working in local government. Thank you to everyone who came together for our very first Water Quality Conference today. Special thanks to our excellent speakers! We dived deep into Regulation 8 of the Private Water Supplies, with a variety of sessions and perspectives shared. We heard direct from local authorities learnings from case studies on forever chemicals, as well as the Cryptosporidium outbreak in Devon earlier this year. Key information was also provided on fats, oils and grease and the role of environmental health officers. Water for Kids left us feeling inspired with a session reflecting on the safe water and sanitation projects delivered in partnership with environmental health professionals. If you joined us online, we'd love to hear your thoughts on our first Water Quality Conference – let us know in the comments! #CIEHWaterQuality #SafeWater #PrivateWaterSupplies #EnvironmentalHealth
