The future of AI assisted cancer surgery
About us
CLASSICA is an EU-funded project looking at how to deploy cancer classification AI technology in the operating theatre. We will clinically validate a novel AI-guided intraoperative decision-support technology across several clinics, surgical teams, and countries. Our technology will differentiate between cancerous and non-cancerous tissues in real-time. The project involves 11 partners from 9 countries across Europe, with expertise in colorectal cancer, precision surgery, AI and technology, biomedical law and ethics, surgical training, and surgical guidelines. Partners of the CLASSICA project: - University College Dublin (UCD) - Coordinator - IRCAD - The European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) - Pintail - University of Copenhagen (UCPH) - University of Turin (UNITO) - Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL) - Arctur - VU University Medical Center (VUmc) - Penn State Dickinson Law - KH Barmherzige Brüder Graz CLASSICA is funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are, however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the Health and Digital Executive Agency. Excited to see 2 new collaborative papers with great colleagues fresh off the presses: The first one with Sebastian Porsdam Mann and I. Glenn Cohen examines "The #EU #AI #Act: Implications for #US #Health #Care" and was published in NEJM AI. It is available at: https://lnkd.in/dwAvunjk From the abstract: „This article analyzes the AIA’s key implications for physicians and medical innovators in the United States. We examine the Act’s risk-based approach, extraterritorial reach, and potential to influence global medical AI policy. We outline the key provisions of the AIA for medical AI systems and discuss its measures to support innovation. As implementation begins, U.S. health care stakeholders must engage proactively with this new regulatory landscape to remain competitive and gain access to the EU market.“ The second article with Charlotte A. Tschider and Marcelo Corrales Compagnucci is „open access“ and focuses on cross-border #health #data #sharing and discusses "The new EU-US data protection framework's implications for healthcare“. It is now available at the Journal of Law & the Biosciences (Oxford University Press ) at: https://lnkd.in/dsi2d354 From the abstract: „This article highlights the DPF’s potential impact on the healthcare and research sectors, finding that the DPF may not provide the degree of lawful health data transfer desirable for healthcare entities. We examine the DPF against a background of existing Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act obligations and other GDPR transfer tools to offer alternatives that can improve the likelihood of reliable, lawful health data transfer between the US and EU.“ CeBIL , The Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School , University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Law , CLASSICA project , Novo Nordisk Foundation, Charlotte Schöller , Mikkel Bülow Skovborg
