We were proud to take part in the ‘Break the Cycle’ 1km ride at the National Ploughing Association / Championships for the #Aware campaign 💚, helping raise awareness of mental health in rural Ireland. Big shout out to the Irish Farmers Journal and Tirlán for highlighting this important issue. We all know mental health is critical in farming, and while awareness is vital, we need to get to the root causes, of which the financial pressures farmers face is a major contributor. The whole situation around the collapse of Mona Dairy is terribly sad. Potentially one of the most sustainable #cheese plants in Europe now closed leaving £37 million worth of debt (Source: The Grocer 14/08/2024). The Welsh government owed £3 million. Millions are owed to farmers who worked tirelessly to supply milk and they will be paid LAST. 🚨 When negotiating a Milk Supply Agreement make sure you have title of your milk when it leaves the farm gate, know the terms of your contract, know the prices as if your processor goes bankrupt you’ll need to paid first. At National Ploughing Association / Championships this year there was lots of talk about environmental #sustainability. There was a nod to social sustainability, but one crucial piece is being left out: economic sustainability. Without it, the 3-legged stool of sustainability collapses. #Scope3 urges #emissions reductions in the supply chain but quite simply, farmers can’t go green if they’re in the red, they need economic sustainability. The real question we should be asking is, how do we ensure farmers are paid fairly so they can afford these vital environmental initiatives? At the National Ploughing Association / Championships we visited the CSO (Central Statistics Office Ireland) stand and used the CSO calculator to compare the costs of a pint of Guinness from March 1980 to today and the cost of a litre of milk. What we found highlights a serious issue for dairy farmers. 📈 According to the CSO calculator farmers should be getting €1.81 for a litre of milk (many are getting around €0.44 a litre). 📈 Back in 1980, a pint of #Guinness was €0.67; today’s price is €3.20. At the Ploughing, that pint would cost you closer to €7! Fair play to Guinness and Diageo for securing a price that keeps the business profitable, but shouldn’t dairy farmers be able to do the same? 🎯 At Concept Dairy™ 🚀, we believe that it’s time that the #DairySector tackles price volatility head-on! In 2019 we were at 62% utilisation. 💶 Billions of euros have been invested in new milk processing capacity across Ireland, these decisions were made back when the quotas were lifted in 2015 and it was the right decision at the time. 🚀New plants since 2019: North Cork Creameries Ltd Lakeland Dairies Aurivo Co-operative Society Limited Arrabawn Carbery Group Leprino Foods Tipperary Co-Op Ornua Strathroy Dairy (R.O.I.)
