This week is World Iron Awareness Week 🩸 Did you know that iron deficiency affects 30% of the world's population and is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies? Iron is needed to support the transportation of oxygen in our bodies, help brain and immune health, and to provide us with more energy. Red meat provides easily absorbed iron and is generally richer in haem iron than chicken or fish. Pairing meat with vegetables in a meal will help your body absorb 2-3 times more iron from the vegetables. Remember to introduce red meat to your meal plan this World Iron Awareness Week and beyond!🥩 Source: World Iron Awareness Week, https://lnkd.in/gijVyD6

Dawn Meats are proud to sign up to the Charter of Sustainable Irish Beef which was launched by Meat Industry Ireland (MII) this week. The charter commits the country’s leading beef processors to accelerate the decarbonisation of beef production and encourage best practice among their suppliers. It also requires them to protect the natural environment and deliver broad-based benefits for society while remaining profitable, maintaining livelihoods and enhancing food security. The charter outlines a series of priority actions in areas such as environmental stewardship, animal care, supply chain resilience, health and nutrition and sustainability. It was officially launched this week by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue. Speaking at the launch of the MII Charter for Sustainable Beef, Gill Higgins, Group Sustainability Director at Dawn Meats commented ‘This charter highlights the ambition of the Irish Beef Sector in accelerating progress and maintaining Ireland’s position as a leading global supplier of high-quality, sustainably sourced beef. Dawn Meats are proud to sign up to the Charter and continue the collaboration with industry, customers and suppliers to scale investment and drive continuous improvement”. This week Meat Industry Ireland (MII) have launched a new video series, which aims to raise awareness of the progress being made by producers in reaching environmental targets. As part of the video series, Richard Clinton, Group Commercial Director at Dawn Meats, and Dr Paul Crossan, Teagasc Beef Enterprise Leader, discuss the benefits of early finishing at Newford Farm. Reducing the age at which cattle are processed is an effective way to reduce carbon emissions and boost productivity in beef enterprises. The beef industry is committed to encouraging early finishing through the Quality Payment Scheme with €50 million allocated annually to in-spec animals finished at under 30 months of age. By reducing the average finishing age to 23 months by 2030, the industry could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 820,000 tonnes annually.
