  • Minister Roderic O'Gorman has today welcomed the Maternity Protection Employment Equality and Preservation of Certain Records Bill 2024 passing all Stages in the Oireachtas. The legislation will allow an employee who receives a diagnosis of a serious illness to postpone maternity leave until treatment is concluded, and follows the ‘Leave Our Leave’ campaign by the Irish Cancer Society. The maternity leave can be postponed for between 5 and 52 weeks, on certification from their doctor. Postponing maternity leave will not sacrifice other forms of leave, such as unpaid maternity leave and Parents Leave. https://brnw.ch/21wO4mY

Super day at the All Department Day at Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth I wanted to say thanks for what was an incredibly uplifting experience. The event featured truly inspirational speakers overall but Dr. Katriona O’Sullivan is a profound and exceptional human who not only motivated us but challenged us to think forward and innovate within our roles. It was clear that DCEDIY is a forward-thinking department that values growth, collaboration, and positivity at every level. Well done to all involved, the atmosphere was vibrant, and the focus on positive change left me feeling proud to be part of this incredible team. Days like this remind me why I’m so thankful to work for DCEDIY – a department that genuinely cares about its people and its impact. Loved every minute !

Sometimes we get into the daily routine so much that we can briefly lose sight of why we do what we do. Yesterday my colleagues and I at the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth got to see and appreciate the results of our work at our #AllStaff event with some amazing speakers and insightful reflections. It was truly motivating to see the impact of the collective output and receive guidance on how we continue and improve. The whole is certainly greater than the #sumoftheparts! It was also wonderful to connect with colleagues in person that I’m only ever used to seeing on a screen! Thanks to everyone involved and here’s to another day at it! #decdiy #townhall #humanimpact #inperson #connectingcolleagues

That’s a wrap on a fantastic day here at the Department’s All Staff event. In the later sessions of the day we heard from more colleagues and people who have been positively impacted and supported by the work of the Department. These included: -  Julia Tarrant, Principal Officer in the Mother & Baby Homes, Finance and Research Division, who introduced Patricia Carey. Patricia is the Special Advocate for Survivors of Institutional Abuse. She spoke about the importance and impact of the Action Plan for Survivors and Former Residents of Mother and Baby and County Home Institutions, and the National Centre for Research and Remembrance. -  Hannah Graham, Assistant Principal Officer in the International Protection & Integration Division, introduced Radwan Aboujahar. Radwan came to Ireland under the Refugee Resettlement Programme in 2014, fleeing the war in Syria with his family. Radwan told us about his role as an Integration Support Officer with Laois County Council, helping people facing the same challenges he once did as a refugee to integrate and thrive in their new communities in Laois. Radwan said his advice to refugees and international protection applicants is to “seize every chance to give back to this generous nation” and on the impact of the Department’s work he said that it “creates hope”. -  Mark Considine, Principal Officer in the Early Years Division, spoke about the impact of the Access and Inclusion Model (AIM), which ensures children with disabilities can access the ECCE pre-school programme and engage fully with it. Mark quoted Lorraine Dempsey, a parent whose child benefitted from AIM, on the impact of this work which “may be as simple as making happy memories for every child in this country”. -  Sadhbh O’Brien, Administrative Officer in the Equality, Participation, Youth, International & Adoption Division, introduced Charlie Beaudelot. Charlie spoke about the importance and impact of youth participation, particularly Comhairle na nÓg, as providing “safe and inclusive spaces” for young people, as well as an “incredible community”. -  Minister Roderic O’Gorman who spoke about the dedication and focus of the colleagues he has worked with in his years as Minister. -  Finally, we had a wonderful guest speaker in the form of Katriona O’Sullivan and a lively discussion panel of colleagues from across the Department reflecting on everything we’ve heard today before our Secretary General Kevin McCarthy closed out the day. A huge thank you and well done to all our speakers today, particularly those who brought home to us the impact and importance of what the Department does. If you attended today, we’d love to hear your thoughts. If you missed it, we’ll be posting some reflections on everything we discussed and learned in the coming days.

Integration Support worker, MA Refugee Integration Community Development

I was truly honoured to be invited to speak at yesterday's Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth DCEDIY conference, Our Work Matters. I shared my experiences as a resettled refugee in Ireland and also as a service provider, drawing on my previous roles as a Resettlement Worker and my recent work as Integration Support worker with Laois County Council. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and was glad to reconnect with many friends and colleagues I've had the privilege of working alongside on various occasions. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the department for inviting me to be one of the speakers, and a special thanks to Hannah Graham for her support.
