About us
Dublin Simon Community works to prevent and address homelessness in Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Meath, Cavan, Monaghan & Louth. We provide services at all stages of homelessness and enable people to move to a place they can call home. At Simon, we listen to people who turn to us for help and do everything we can to support them to move out of homelessness into independent living. We strive to empower people to access, secure and retain a home of their own by reducing the reliance on short-term emergency accommodation and providing permanent supported housing for people to sustain a home in their local community. Moving people into supported housing produces life-enhancing and life-saving results and is more cost-effective in the long run. The organisation was founded by a group of Trinity and UCD students in 1969, who began by providing much-needed soup and sandwiches to people who were sleeping rough in Dublin city centre. In addition to the Soup Run, which still goes out 365 nights of the year, Dublin Simon provide many services which aim to help those who are sleeping rough on the streets, people who are in their own accommodation but at risk of homelessness and those who are at any of the stages in between. (Charity number CHY 5963).

Latest figures released today by the Department of Housing reveal record numbers of people in emergency accommodation, with 10,481 in Dublin, including 1,467 families, 3,273 children, and 4,664 single adults. This comes as conversations surrounding next week’s Budget show a lack of vision and little movement towards increased investment in social policies to address the crisis. These figures do not account for those rough sleeping, individuals in domestic violence shelters, refugees, or asylum seekers on our streets. Click here for full statement: https://lnkd.in/gcDPhMHc

Earlier this year, we received an anonymous donation made very generously by a family in memory of their beloved daughter Louise, who sadly passed away. Louise wanted her legacy to live on through the work we do every day to prevent and end homelessness. In her honour, we planted a pear tree in our Riversdale House Long Term Supported Accommodation service, a place where residents can find peace and comfort for years to come. We spoke to John, a resident of Riversdale for nearly 7 years. He shares that Riversdale feels like a “home away from home” thanks to the caring staff, the organised activities, and the relaxing garden - now enhanced by Louise’s tree. This #MyLegacyMonth, we invite you to consider leaving a legacy of your own by including us in your will. Just as Louise’s memory will live on, so can yours, helping us continue our work to change lives 💛 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eawnfVhw #DublinSimon #MyLegacyMonth #MyLegacyWillBe #GivingBack #EndHomelessness

Wishing the best of luck to one of our clients, Shane Byrne, who has been selected to participate in this year’s Homeless World Cup in Seoul, South Korea, from the 21st to the 28th of September ⚽🏆 Growing up, football was always a passion for Shane, but he never imagined having an opportunity to represent his country. Behind this amazing achievement are the immense challenges he faced while experiencing homelessness. Despite the many obstacles, his dedication, determination, and resilience have brought him to this moment of triumph. “When I was homeless, it was rough. I had nowhere to call home. My drug addiction was so bad that I felt like I wasn't living, I was just existing. I knew there was something better than this. When I got referred to Ellen Hall, one of Dublin Simon’s Recovery Services, I found amazing support from the staff. They saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. This helped me to regain structure and get a routine back in place, which motivated me to start playing football again. I was invited to attend trials for the Ireland squad for 5 weeks, every Saturday and I never missed a training session. I kept showing up and all the staff kept pushing me. Eventually, I did the trials, and I got selected. When I received the news, I was delighted. Now, I can't wait to go. Apart from the health benefits, playing football has given me a sense of belonging and hope for the future." We could not be prouder of Shane 💛 we know his journey will inspire many others! When he is back in Ireland, he also looks forward to participating in our Home Run event, taking place on Saturday 5th October. Our Annual Impact Report for 2023 shows over 6,000 people supported by our services, with an 11% increase in the number of people supported last year. The report was launched this morning at our 100-bed Usher’s Island health and addiction care facility, a key part of our story moving forward, allowing us to make a greater impact by making home a reality for all. Catherine Kenny, CEO of Dublin Simon Community, states, “The surge in homelessness feeds a continuing strain on our services and highlights an urgent need for increased capacity in health and addiction treatment services that are tailored to the needs of those with an experience of homelessness. We call for the Government to invest in these essential treatment services as it returns to the Dáil today, and ahead of Budget 2025.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eXdxBxFr #DublinSimon #DublinSimonImpactReport2023 #DublinSimonUshers #UshersIsland
