Woohoo!!!
I am very proud to announce that I am now an accredited Coaching Master! (Don't mind the name on there, it's from Facebook and it's all the Welsh crowd's fault!)
I help women in STEM who have hit a ceiling in their career to develop the clarity and confidence to make the leap to the next level. To this day, I check the bathroom situation in any interview I go to. People laugh, but it has been an issue in my early career. Particularly when I was working in a wider male-dominated industry, rather than just a male-dominated department (engineering). Now, ok, bathrooms are (mostly) the least of our worries now. But there are other barriers, visible and invisible, stopping women in STEM progressing to the next level of their careers. It can be subtle and it can be really obvious. Either way – after 20+ years working as an engineer in everything from heavy industry like steel and defence to more modern ones like pharma and medtech, there’s very little I haven’t come across: ->That manager who appears to support you, but equally always has an excuse for not allowing you to go on that training course or take on more responsibility. ->The senior manager who always stops you in the canteen but always has an excuse for not engaging you in exciting projects. ->The colleague with less experience who always appears to be asking you to prove you know your stuff. Unfortunately, none of these are unusual or rare. It happens a lot. And I can help you deal with all of it. We can work together to ->Develop strategies to deal with constant questioning of your expertise. ->Decide how best to approach your manager with requests for training or further learning. ->How to construct your CV to highlight the right skills in the right places. ->Develop a career plan that works for you. -> Get crystal clear on what you need and want from your career ->Isolate and overcome the limiting beliefs that are holding you back from the career you want and deserve! Join the Radiance Revolution!
Join the Radiance Revolution! This week, I’ve had a few things about my own development hit me in the face. Things I never thought I’d manage a few years ago. It’s helped me take a step back and consider how far I’ve come in that time. Here’s some highlights: 🔥I passed my accreditation and can now call myself an Accredited Coaching Master! 🔥I had several conversations this week that a few years ago, I would have been planning and preparing for weeks. But I did them ad hoc. Off the cuff even! 🔥I had to step in to a potentially volatile situation with my team and I did so. Again, without overthinking. Even if you go back three years, I would have had to spend a lot of time covering any one of the conversations I’ve had this week. But now, with a bit of extra experience and practice, it’s something I can just do. This is the power of experience and knowing yourself. It’s the power of confidence. It’s also a testament to the many coaches I’ve had agree to work with me in the past 10 years! I mean, a few years ago, I was scared of posting anything on LinkedIn for fear it might put off a future employer. Now, I think it’s best they know what they’re going to get with me. Saves time all round! And with that in mind, I want to let ye know about a transformative, online experience I’m taking part in on 10th November. Which is getting closer by the day! Seriously, don't wait for the full review. Go get it now.
I've just finished Likeable Badass: How women get the succes they deserve by Alison Fragale and honestly? Ye should all go buy it and read it immediately. I'll do a proper book review in a few days, but don't wait that long!
This came up on my page a day calendar yesterday and I think it's a really positive message. I remember when it seemed like no one understood what I was dealing with, inwork,at home, anywhere. I felt like I was the only one dealing with any of it. I wasn't, of course. But I didn't know where or how to even start asking for help. And I don't want to leave anyone in that position. Especially if it's something I can help with. So, if you're stuck, or feeling lost,or just don't know where to even start with asking for help... reach out. I guarantee, even if I don't know how to help, I will know someone who does. Don't struggle on in silence. You're not alone.
🫏 I know. I’m stubborn. So are most of the women I know who remain in engineering for the longer term. 🕰️As in decades. This is why I work with women in engineering. Because sometimes it takes one to know one. Certainly, it can take one to understand what the other one is going through. Things I (or women I have worked with) have gone through at work 🫢Physical assault 🫢Mental and emotional abuse 🫢 Intimidation 🫢Exclusion 🫢Underestimated constantly … and many, many more. And look – just because you haven’t experienced these extremes, doesn’t mean you don’t also have valid problems in the workplace. 🤯Bullying 🤯Harassment 🤯Being passed over 🤯“Benevolent” sexism 🤯Office Mammy And it’s possible to escape them. I can help. If you’re looking to move forwards in your career, but feel like you’re coming up against barriers you’re struggling to deal with, why not reach out and have a 1:1 session with me? info@engineerher.org
New post on the blog: Here's the process I take women through to help them overcome the visible and invisible barriers they face in the workplace when trying to move to the next level in their careers. I know it can seem overwhelming to start with to move towards a career you enjoy, love and provides you with the financial and other resources to actually live your life. That's why I've put together a six step process to get you through the journey. Or at least on the journey, because, spoiler alert: this isn't necessarily a linear journey, nor is it one that you do once and then never again.
New post on the blog: The Irish concept of "notions" can be a tough one to explain to those not familiar with the idea. And while the concept exists in other cultures, I've yet to come across anywhere it is developed and integrated so well as in Ireland. And honestly? That's not necessarily good! So what is the wheel of work? And why would you be interested in it? Yeah there's a new post on the blog.... The wheel of life is a coaching tool to help people identify which parts of their life they are happy and content with and the areas they aren't as happy with. Now, I don't have any affiliations with that website linked above, but it has a decent enough explanation of the wheel of life. But the title of this post is "wheel of work", not wheel of life. Well, yeah. For many of the people I speak to, work is where they want to focus. There are well aware that there are other areas of their lives where they might not be 100% happy, but frankly, they want to focus on work and why would I stop them?
New post on the blog: I've been talking to a lot of people over the last few weeks about them being stuck in their careers. To the point, I put together a small booklet to help people get started on getting "unstuck". It happens, there's nothing wrong with it. Anyone can get into a rut or feel a bit down about work. It's not all excitement and high spirits and adrenaline. (Thankfully, because the results of too much adrenaline are not pleasant at all) But what do you do when you feel that "meh" feeling?
