“ESB believes that a secure net-zero energy system in Ireland by 2050 requires key elements: renewables, energy storage, and traditional backup generation. This integrated approach will also deliver security of supply by reducing Ireland’s dependence on fossil fuels from more volatile parts of the world and allow us to develop home-grown energy from our own natural resources. In a sense, we are trading off geopolitical risk for meteorological, so we are always going to need backup technologies to support renewables.” - Clare Duffy, our Dispatchable Generation and Storage Manager. Read more in The Irish Times today about why we are developing large-scale energy storage infrastructure to ensure security of supply and help deliver more renewables on Ireland’s electricity system: https://lnkd.in/eGY6jxrk #ESBNetZeroFuture

2024 starts the transition towards a new kind of integrated reporting under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). In the interim period, we will produce a data centred version of the sustainability report in 2024 and 2025 focused on a data disclosures schedule including metrics, a Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) cross reference index and external review. This approach ensures we continue to focus resources and efforts on our preparedness for delivery against the CSRD requirements whilst also ensuring we are communicating our performance through a GRI aligned disclosure report for calendar years 2023 and 2024. Our CEO Paddy Hayes welcomed delegates from Lower Saxony, Germany to our head office last Friday to discuss our hydrogen and broader decarbonisation plans. The Minister President of Lower Saxony Land Niedersachsen, Stephan Weil, and the German ambassador to Ireland (designate) David Gill led the delegation comprising German governmental and elected officials, industrialists and members of the German-Irish Chamber of Industry & Commerce. The group heard about our commitment to being net zero by 2040 and our planned renewable and zero carbon power generation projects to achieve this goal. With Ireland’s abundance of renewable energy resources, the delegates were eager to hear about the possibilities to export green energy from Ireland to Germany and for industries in Lower Saxony to collaborate with ESB to deliver a decarbonised future. #esbnetzerofuture
