At today’s Energy Ireland-Irish Renewable Gas Conference, our Director of Customer and Business Development, David Kelly and our Head of Business Development, Karen Doyle shared key insights on the future of renewable gas in Ireland. Our Biomethane Programme Manager, Padraig Fleming, was also on hand to expertly guide and facilitate the morning panel sessions. David, presented on "Transforming Ireland’s Gas Network for a Sustainable Energy Future," discussing the integration of renewable gases like biomethane and hydrogen. He emphasised the role of policy, innovation, and collaboration in achieving Ireland’s decarbonisation goals. Karen joined a panel on "Developing a Biomethane Sector in Ireland," with Ciara Beausang (Teagasc), Seán Finan (Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA)), and Niamh Hamill (Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications). The panel chaired by Stephen Robb explored opportunities and challenges in scaling Ireland’s biomethane industry, essential for emissions reduction and energy security. Biomethane has the potential to play a significant role in Ireland’s energy transition, supporting emissions reduction targets while ensuring a secure and resilient energy system. Continued engagement between policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders will be essential to unlocking this potential. #Biomethane #RenewableGas #MovingIrelandsEnergy #EnergyIreland

We own, operate, build and maintain the natural gas network in Ireland and connect all customers to the gas network.
About us
Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €2.8bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. By working to replace natural gas with renewable gases, such as biomethane and hydrogen, and complementing intermittent renewable electricity, Gas Networks Ireland is supporting Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future.

Aurora Telecom would like to inform our customers that after multiple power outages on the electricity network caused by Storm Éowyn, we now have power restored to all our co-location sites. During Storm Eowyn, seven of our co-location sites lost commercial power but we are pleased to advise that our investment in onsite back-up generators has ensured that there was no impact on our customer business critical operations. Quality and resilience are at the core of our network proposition and over the duration of the storm, we had almost 26 days of runtime across our generators maintaining power to all our customers. Thank you to our partners Finning Energy & Transportation and OCS who played key roles in the delivery of our generator project. We continue to monitor our footprint and maintain service but if any of our customers do experience emergency loss of service, please contact 1800 427 399 (Ireland) or +353 1 203 0120 (International). To learn more about our co-location sites, please visit https://lnkd.in/e2sXR5JE

In a recent interview with the The Irish Times, our Director of Customer and Business Development, David Kelly highlighted the critical role of government support in advancing biomethane development. We are actively engaging with leading biomethane sector players including Bia Energy, CycleØ , Stream BioEnergy and Nephin Renewable Gas (Nephin Energy) and constructing new facilities, such as the central grid injection facility in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, to meet Ireland’s renewable gas target. David also discussed the future of hydrogen in Ireland's energy landscape, emphasising the importance of international collaboration with other Northern European transmission system operators (TSOs) through initiatives like HyNOS. By 2045, we aim to have dedicated biomethane and hydrogen grids, significantly contributing to the decarbonisation of the energy network as referenced in our Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network strategy. HyNOS (Hydrogen Networks for the Northern Seas) is a working group of European gas transmission system operators (TSOs) from around the Northern Seas that includes Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom and Ireland. Today, this group met in Berlin to exchange views on how to stimulate offshore wind through the integrated production of electricity and hydrogen on the Northern Seas. Green Hydrogen production can help to maximise the potential of offshore wind, increase the use of offshore infrastructure, and ultimately reduce costs. At Gas Networks Ireland, we look forward to continuing our collaboration as we work towards a sustainable energy future. HyNOS will meet again later this year at the 2025 North Sea Summit in Germany. #HyNOS #Hydrogen #GreenHydrogen
