The Tánaiste Micheál Martin joined our CEO, Cathal Marley to officially commence construction on the €32m Mitchelstown central grid injection (CGI) facility, a key infrastructure project that will play a critical role in the decarbonisation of Ireland’s energy system. This project is strategic progress in action and aligns with our Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network, which outlines our commitment to transporting 100% renewable gases by 2045. Once operational, the CGI will have the capacity to inject up to 700 GWh of renewable biomethane into the national gas network each year, contributing to a reduction of 130,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The Mitchelstown CGI facility will help meet nearly 12% of the government's 2030 Climate Action Plan biomethane production target, significantly advancing Ireland’s renewable energy capabilities. We own, operate, build and maintain the natural gas network in Ireland and connect all customers to the gas network.
About us
Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €2.8bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. By working to replace natural gas with renewable gases, such as biomethane and hydrogen, and complementing intermittent renewable electricity, Gas Networks Ireland is supporting Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future.

It was a pleasure to have Tánaiste Micheál Martin join us to officially commence construction on our new central grid injection facility (CGI) in Mitchelstown. The Mitchelstown CGI facility is part of the broader Green Renewable Agricultural Zero Emissions (GRAZE) project, which is designed to showcase large scale agricultural biomethane clusters that can be replicated across the country. Supported by the Government through €8.4 million in funding from the Climate Action Fund, the GRAZE project is a testament to Ireland’s commitment to advancing renewable energy and achieving national energy security. Our vision as an organisation is to create a repurposed, resized, and fully decarbonised network by 2045, ensuring energy security and supporting some of Ireland’s largest energy users to meet their own decarbonisation challenges. It will be key infrastructure projects such as this that will allow us support delivery of Ireland’s ambitious climate targets.
Tánaiste & Minister for Foreign Affairs & Minister for Defence - Uachtarán Fhianna Fáil, TD for Cork South Central
Pleased to turn the sod on the new biomethane Central Grid Injection facility in Mitchelstown, Cork. A major milestone in Ireland’s drive to net zero and an opportunity for farmers to produce renewable energy, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Gas Networks Ireland https://lnkd.in/eRfmhf7c

Gas Networks Ireland and the Lidon Group are making a significant contribution to reducing emissions from the commercial transport industry with the launch of Ireland’s newest bioCNG station at Junction 14 Mayfield. Our colleague Fran McFadden and the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, James Lawless TD, explain how renewable bioCNG and the new station will transform one of Ireland’s busiest transport corridors into a more sustainable route for heavy goods vehicles with locally produced biomethane. Heavy commercial transport is one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise, but bioCNG can provide commercial fleet operators and their customers with an ideal solution to transition from diesel and decarbonise their businesses. Visit our website at www.gasnetworks.ie/biocng to learn more about bioCNG. #BioCNG #Biomethane #SDGsIRL #MovingIrelandsEnergy
