Embracing Academic Relatability
Reflecting on my recent experience in a new class structure under Global-MINDS.eu, I’ve come to appreciate a profound cultural shift in how academia operates here. It struck me that researchers and professors are not distant figures or untouchable idols. Instead, they are relatable colleagues who share their journeys, insights, and even personal anecdotes.
In class, (particularly in amazing sessions with Prof.Christin-Melanie Vauclair and Prof.Ricardo Borges Rodrigues (he/him) I was pleasantly surprised to see professors displaying theorists' photos, affiliations, and favorite quotes. This practice not only humanizes them but also breaks down the barriers that often make researchers feel like distant “gods” in the academic world. The warmth with which they refer to theorists and researchers—almost as peers—makes a significant difference in how we engage with the material. It fosters an environment where collaboration and discussion thrive, rather than one where students feel overshadowed by an aura of superiority.
This cultural difference is particularly striking to me, coming from a background where authority in academia is often portrayed with a sense of distance and hierarchy. Here, it feels more like a community, where everyone contributes to the conversation, regardless of their position.
I am grateful for this experience, as it has not only reshaped my perception of what it means to be part of an academic environment but also reinforced the value of approaching education with humility and openness.
Sharing some here, to encourage the ongoing applications!!!
