We all have a responsibility to keep her flame burning bright. To make sure 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 girl dreams big, knowing that her spark is worth protecting. By just FIVE years old, many girls begin to doubt their capabilities, underestimate their potential and lose faith in themselves. They start to believe they’re not as good as boys and feel less than. The unconscious bias of society extinguishes their dreams. This #InternationalDayOfTheGirl, we urge you to Reflect. Challenge. Advocate. It’s unacceptable to let this culture persist - one where girls feel like they don’t belong in sport. In 2024, do we really accept the inequality in sport? The lack of opportunity for girls?! It’s time demand change and #DoItForHer Every one of us carries unconscious biases that hold girls back, whispering “No, not you.” Yet the fire in her heart asks, “Why not?” 1 in 2 girls drop out of sport by age 20. Girls feel they don’t belong. But we must close this gap and help her see beyond limitations. When the world is silent, even one voice can be powerful. 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 voice has the power to change 𝗛𝗘𝗥 future. It’s up to each of us to keep her flame alive. Challenge the status quo, demand change, and believe in her. When we do, she can light up the world. #DoItForHer How can you help? 1. England and PSG goalkeeper Mary Earps took to Linkedin recently to speak about three ways in which women’s football could be improved. Her main three points were an increase in investment and media coverage, the expansion of grassroots programs and improved facilities and resources. What do you think? Is there anything else that the women’s game is missing that would help it to reach its full potential?

Saoirse Ronan Just Said What Every Woman Feels 👏🏼 During a recent Graham Norton episode, self-defence became the topic of conversation. Saoirse Ronan magnificently cut through the humour to highlight the harsh reality women face daily. When Eddie Redmayne mentioned using a smartphone to defend oneself, Paul Mescal joked, “Who’s actually going to think about that?”—prompting laughs from the men on stage. Ronan tried to jump in, and you can see her saying it was actually a good idea, but after being spoken over twice, she made it clear. “That’s what girls have to think about all the time.” The conversation might be a light-hearted joke for some but it is the everyday reality for EVERY woman. Let’s just look at the facts. • Half of all women feel unsafe walking alone in their own neighbourhoods after dark. For men? Just one in seven. • In busy public places, one in two women feel uneasy alone at night. Only one in five men feel the same. • Four in five women feel vulnerable walking alone in a park after dark, compared to just two in five men. • Two-thirds of young women (16-34) experience harassment each year, with almost half dealing with catcalls or unwanted sexual remarks. • Over half of all women are afraid of being physically attacked while out running—compared to 28% of men. Thank you for speaking up Saoirse 👏🏼 🇮🇪 🎥: @thegrahamnortonshowofficial

In a recent study conducted by the Women's Sports Foundation, it was found that one of the main barriers to developing traits and skills through sports participation for girls is a lack of parental support in sports, with over 20% of respondents citing this reason. Early access to sports for girls is found to have developed traits associated with leadership, and women who have engaged in sports activities fulfil a variety of leadership roles in adulthood. Supporting girls in sport goes a very long way. To find out more about how you can contribute and support, email us at foundation@hersport.ie.
