IDOM's project featured on the cover of ENR We are thrilled to announce that our work on the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) enclosure has been highlighted on the cover of Engineering News-Record (ENR), a testament to our commitment to cutting-edge engineering solutions in the field of astronomical research. The GMT, once completed, will be one of the world’s most advanced ground-based telescopes, designed to provide unprecedented clarity in observing the universe. This recognition underscores the innovative engineering behind the telescope’s rotating enclosure, which is crucial for its operation in the challenging conditions of the Atacama desert. “This project is not only a remarkable engineering challenge but also an incredibly passionate journey for our team. The complexity of the GMT’s design pushes us to innovate continually, and we are proud to contribute to a project that will redefine our understanding of the cosmos.” says Nerea Castro, deputy project manager for the GMT enclosure design. “While there are large telescopes in seismically active regions such as Chile and Hawaii, use of seismic isolation on the structures is relatively uncommon. But as the telescopes get larger and more elaborate, it’s a concern”, says Tom Lorentz, president of North American operations for Spain-based IDOM. This has been one of the most interesting challenges as the seismic isolation system must provide the necessary stiffness for the telescope fine operation while providing isolation in case of seismic event avoiding harming any of the telescope’s hardware. This project reflects our dedication to advancing astronomical capabilities while adhering to the highest engineering standards. We look forward to the continued development of this groundbreaking facility, which is set to reshape our understanding of the cosmos. ENR article can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gJETpJdH

We participated in the National Conference for the Defence of Competition, held at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao on 17 and 18 October. During the event, highly relevant topics were discussed. These included the challenges facing the European Union in the current geopolitical situation, digital and climate change, and migration flows, among others. Joaquín Almunia, European Commissioner for Competition between 2010 and 2014, offered his vision of competition policy in this context. The main priorities of the EU were reviewed, focusing on sustainability, security and competitiveness. This highlighted the EU's loss of economic ground to the United States and China, and underlined the urgency of a common industrial and energy policy among Member States. Among the various discussions that took place, one of the most prominent was the impact of competition law on the energy sector. Issues such as the impact of third country subsidies on the internal market were addressed. The project "Municipalities and Competition", promoted by the Competition Authorities of several Autonomous Communities, was also reviewed, analyzing key aspects such as contract renewals and small contracts. Finally, the most innovative methods for detecting cartels were presented, highlighting the role of artificial intelligence, which is becoming increasingly important in the field of competition. #JornadasCompetencia2024 #CompetitionDefense #Compliance #CompetitionLaw
