I spent the latter part of this week in Killarney at the annual HEANet Conference, one of Ireland’s leading education and research conferences with 430 delegates from across the educational sector - details at https://lnkd.in/eW4_qfUN I was part of a panel session on "Artificial Intelligence for Research and Education: Opportunities and Risks" and then I gave a plenary talk on "Looking Beyond the Assessment Threats: Positive Uses of Generative AI in Teaching and Learning". In that plenary talk I gave some background on what is generative AI and LLMs and what it can and should not be used for, and I presented 5 innovative use cases ffor using GenAI in education. These covered (1) conversational Teaching Assistants as another lens on content for students, which I have done in my own teaching, (2) AI-powered role playing allowing students to interview LLMs fine-tuned on famous persons which I am working on with colleagues, (3) improving accessibility to online content for students with specialist requirements which everybody should, and will, be doing, (4) supporting real time question-answering on lecture content during the lecture which I am working on, and finally (5) assisting with content creation as part of a team which my colleague John Keating at Maynooth University is doing. The slides from that presentation are available here if you are interested. #HEAnet2024

Prof Alan Smeaton Dublin City University is the first guest on the new #ConnectedAI #podcast Elaine Burke Expleo Group University College Dublin University College Cork University of Galway Research Ireland
The first guest on the new Connected AI podcast, proudly presented in association with Expleo Group, is Professor Alan Smeaton. As a Professor of Computing at Dublin City University, a founding director of the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics, and a member of the Irish government’s AI Advisory Council, he has made an immense impact on the field and continues to shape the future of AI in Ireland. On a more personal note, Alan and his family are lifelong friends. Growing up, I may not have fully understood the incredible work he was involved in, but looking back now, I can really appreciate the talent and dedication that inspired me and so many others. It was a pleasure reconnecting with him a few months ago as we were both speaking at the same event – a full-circle moment that reminds me how far we’ve come! Have a listen to the episode to gain insights from one of the best in the field! Charlie Taylor Elaine Burke

AI/ML Research | PhD @ Dublin City University | 30 under 30 Ireland | AI Community Lead | Insight SFI Centre for Data Analytics
#PaperAlert At the start of my PhD studies in a relatively new research area compared to my previous experiences, survey papers and PhD theses were my primary resources. These helped me understand the field's fundamentals, progress made and existing research gaps. I'm excited to share our recently published survey paper on Event-Based/Neuromorphic Eye Motion Analysis. In this paper, we explore and discuss the ongoing advancements and gaps in the use of event cameras for tasks such as gaze estimation, eye tracking, and blink detection, etc If you are new to this field or looking for a resource on current trends, please check out the paper in the #IEEE Open Access journal. https://lnkd.in/eFbM-ihy My deepest appreciation to all co-authors and supervisors (Waseem Shariff , Peter Corcoran , Noel O'Connor,Suzanne Little and Joe Lemley ) for their dedication and support from the beginning to the end of this project. Special thanks to the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics for funding. #neuromorphicvision #event-based vision #eyetracking
