AgTech-It's in our DNA

About us

We are an independent, Farmer led organisation providing services to Irish farmers and industry. Our shareholders consist of Farmers, Milk Recording, AI & Herdbooks organisations. With Sustainability now a global priority, ICBF’s integrated database, with its metrics and scientific methodologies, have a key part to play in helping Irish agriculture rise to this challenge. “AgTech,” describes innovative technologies in the ag sector that enhance social, economic, and environmental sustainability. We collaborated with Teagasc to develop profit indexes. Hosting the national AgTech database and collaborating with stakeholders means that we can analyse trends in genetic gain, fertility, herd health and carbon emissions in animals. We work with farmers & industry partners in the adoption of beef and dairy indexes (EBI and EuroStars). We provide services like Herdplus, as well as technologies and training that drive decision-making at farm level. Partnership with industry, especially AI, Milk Recording and Herdbooks in the delivery of breeding services has driven sectoral change in terms of genetic merit, reputation and profitability of the national herd. Alongside our partners, we have harnessed the power of the national integrated AgTech database, to deliver world class programmes. ICBF has led ‘sustainability through AgTech’ thanks to 20 years of collaboration. The database and the associated data capture technologies provide industry with the decision-making information to ensure the breeding of the next generation of animals is more environmentally and economically sustainable than the last. Our farmer and industry collaboration has played a key role in Ireland being at the forefront of AgTech worldwide.

The Suckler Beef Gene Ireland Panel for Autumn 2024 has been launched, and we are excited to offer our customers the latest selection of AI bulls. These bulls, selected by ICBF and our programme partners as part of the national breeding programme, in collaboration with DAFM, ICBF, commercial farmers, pedigree breeders, and breed societies. The Gene Ireland beef programme continues to grow in popularity as both commercial and pedigree breeders recognise the benefits of these new high index bulls. Some of the most widely used AI bulls in the Irish suckler herd originated on the Gene Ireland programme, including Intelagri Matteo (AA4089), Lapon (CH4321), Castleview Gazelle (ZAG), Curraheen Earp (SI2152), Ewdenvale Ivor (LM2014), and Powerful Proper (LM7416). These bulls have become cornerstones of many herds, with significant numbers of their progeny retained as breeding stock. The primary goal of the Gene Ireland programme is to progeny test young, high-index bulls and provide Irish suckler farmers with proven, high-index bulls as swiftly as possible. Increasingly, these bulls are young Irish sires identified through the ICBF database. Progeny testing helps verify their indexes and genetic merit, enabling stakeholders (breed societies, AI companies, and breeders) to enhance future breeding programmes with elite proven sires. Herdowners can purchase straws at €7 each (with delivery to their or their technician’s tank), with a minimum order of 10 straws (preferably two bulls x five straws). The usage of these straws within the national herd is critical to the programme’s success. ICBF may also contact farmers to purchase progeny from these bulls for further testing at the progeny test centre in Tully. https://lnkd.in/gT7zG97P

ICBF has recently launched an improved Commercial Euro-Star Catalogue for beef females. The catalogue is available for marts to generate for special sales and for farmers who want to generate a catalogue for selling animals directly off farm. The catalogue will show all of the animals details such as tag, date of birth, breed, etc. The owners name and address will appear under each lot. Under the Euro-Star details, carcass weight, milk and calving interval (fertility) have been added. This allows a potential buyer to assess the traits that make up the overall Replacement Index value. In the fertility section, if serve details have been recorded for an animal, it will show the expected calving date as well as the sire that the animal is in calf to. https://lnkd.in/eUS_tqzV
