We need to incorporate education on biodiversity loss and nature restoration within our education system, from primary, secondary, through to third level. A graduate programme in practical nature restoration for ecologists (or other relevant skills), similar to an apprenticeship would be a good long-term action. On-the-ground learning is essential. This will allow students and graduates to consider different paths in their educational journey that they may not have considered before. More investment is needed in training, staffing, research and expertise for the coordination of an effective delivery of National Restoration Plan (NRP). The NPWS is working on the NRP for Ireland but requires more resources. A large and rapid investment in training and upskilling is needed, including in the short-term to recruit experts from abroad to facilitate rapid training here. UN biodiversity summit comes to abrupt end as deal on global nature fund falls through “Cop16 has stumbled and faltered before the key talks on a financial mechanism could be concluded. After all night negotiations the talks ran out of time and out of delegates and as a result the talks were suspended leaving the key issue of funding in limbo,” said Grace Carr, marine advocacy officer at the The Irish Wildlife Trust. “This is a delay we can’t afford as we see alarming evidence on a weekly basis that the earth is moving towards dangerous environmental tipping points,” she added. The UN gathering has failed to achieve sufficient progress on the key elements of the Kuming-Montreal GBF, including adoption of national biodiversity strategies and action plans, ramping up funding and tackling harmful subsidies, said Fintan Kelly, agriculture and land use policy officer with Irish Environmental Network. “Cop16 has failed to achieve a breakthrough moment on these key issues or to provide the transformative change that is necessary to address biodiversity loss,” he added. https://lnkd.in/ee5n5wrB

Concern at lack of progress as #COP16Colombia Biodiversity summit. In 2022 the world reached a historic agreement at Cop15 in Montreal to stop the human-caused destruction of life on the planet. The deal included targets to protect 30 per cent of Earth for nature by the end of the decade (30x30); to reform $500 billion of environmentally damaging subsidies and to begin restoring 30 per cent of the planet’s degraded ecosystems. Fintan Kelly, land-use policy officer with the Irish Environmental Network, who is attending Cop16 said the commitment made at Cop15 was ambitious, but the funding to achieve this is anything but ambitious. There needs to be billions invested not millions. A fund for developing countries to protect biodiversity was not at the level promised. Countries aren’t treating this as the emergency it is. Grace Carr, Marine Advocacy Officer with The Irish Wildlife Trust who is also attending COP16 said putting money into this fund is not charity. Developed countries are the largest consumers & polluters of the planet & developing countries are paying the price first. https://lnkd.in/g5J_wf66

Long-term thinking and long-term funding for projects is vital for nature restoration. High-Level Recommendations for Funding Nature Restoration in Ireland, a new report by IEN and NCI sets out a roadmap for funding nature and biodiversity restoration and conservation in Ireland. A diverse group of experts from academia, business, environmental NGOs, farming, government departments, and semi-state bodies were assembled by the report authors to workshop solutions to support nature restoration. The implementation of the Nature Restoration Law, Climate Action Plan and Land Use Review will require durable and ongoing supports to enable landowners to implement sustainable land use management. Locking in funding to ensure projects continue into the future is the only way to ensure real impact, according to the report. The authors would like to see an overarching Roadmap for Nature Restoration to facilitate funded initiatives and build on past schemes which have seen successful outcomes but may not be guaranteed long-term support. Several such projects are praised in the report including the award-winning Burren LIFE Project and Roseate Tern LIFE project. You can read the report here: https://lnkd.in/ds-2QA54
