About us
The Irish Green Building Council (IGBC) was launched in 2011, by organisations and businesses from the entire value chain of the built environment. These include universities, professional institutes, local authorities, leading contractors, NGOs, architects, engineers, energy companies and leading national and transnational companies. All are united in one common goal to provide leadership to accelerate the rate of change in Ireland to a sustainable built environment. What we are working on right now: - Energy Renovation & Retrofit - Green Finance - Green Public Procurement (GPP) - Whole Life Carbon & LCA - Circularity in the Build Environment - Net Zero Carbon - Water Efficiency - Biodiversity Our Activities The Irish Green Building Council is looking to transform the Irish industry to sustainable practices through policy creation, education and provision of tools to measure and accelerate progress. - Advocacy: The IGBC is at the heart of inputting into national policy affecting the Irish built environment. The IGBC is involved in supporting large scale energy renovation and green finance projects. - Education, Training and Events: The IGBC host regular green building events and education modules. Training courses provided by the IGBC include green building certification such as LEED, BREEAM and the Home Performance Index, as well as Whole Life Carbon training. - Tools: The IGBC encourage the provision of sustainable building tools including: -> * Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) Platform to enable the mainstreaming of life cycle assessment for buildings in Ireland. * The Home Performance Index, Ireland's national certification for sustainable new homes * Carbon Designer for Ireland, A free early-stage whole life cycle carbon assessment tool for the Irish region. * The CO2 Performance Ladder, a tool for green procurement RCN: 20155568

Buildings have a significant role to play in the protection and restoration of #biodiversity and ecosystems. But what role can sustainable finance play? With the Convention on Biological Diversity #COP16Colombia currently underway, it’s time to recognise the current unequal relationship between humans and ecosystems, and plan how we can make #PeaceWithNature. The #EUTaxonomy provides criteria for economic activities to identify if they are aligned with climate and environmental goals. This includes doing no significant harm to biodiversity and ecosystems. But there are some challenges with the interpretation and implementation of the criteria. The latest factsheet in our #sustainablefinance series explores these challenges and offers recommendations for how the EU Taxonomy criteria can align with other EU policies for more joined up action and reporting. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/exQPmykV While you’re there, see the other factsheets on navigating ESG schemes, Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB), major renovations and Energy Performance Certificates (EPC). #BuildingTheTransition #BuildingToCOP #BuildingToCOP29

Wondering how to implement the May ‘24 updates to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)? World Green Building Council and our Europe Regional Network (ERN) have been studying policy measures already in action in several areas of Europe. Their latest reports examine these approaches in detail so others can see what’s working and design their own green building policies that fulfil the requirements set out in the #EPBD. Member States have until May 2026 to transpose the provisions of the updated EPBD and IGBC is working to support Ireland with a report due to be release very soon. In case you missed it BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe published a report to support European and national policymakers in preparing for whole-life carbon #WLC regulations in buildings. It outlines the experiences of Ireland, Czechia and Spain in developing measurement methodologies and establishing baselines as part of the #INDICATE initiative, ahead of the 2028 EU requirement for life cycle Global Warming Potential (GWP) measurement.

Well done to our Certification Officer, Fernanda Rocha, for her valuable contribution to spreading knowledge and raising awareness about the importance of the #CircularEconomy to future designers.
🌍 I am grateful to have delivered my first lecture about Circular Economy at Technological University Dublin! 🌍 Proud to represent Irish Green Building Council and share insights on how we can reshape the built environment toward a more sustainable, circular future! Yesterday, I had the pleasure of talking to 3rd-year architecture students at TU Dublin about the transition to a circular economy in the built environment. 🌍🏗️ We dove into very important topics like resource efficiency, design for adaptability, and waste reduction—all critical for a sustainable circular future! We wrapped up with a hands-on workshop where students applied these principles in practice. Big thanks to Sarah O'Dwyer, Assistant Lecturer in Architecture for Climate Action at TU Dublin, for the invite! It was inspiring to connect with the next generation of architects! 💡🌱 #CircularEconomy #Architecture #SustainableDesign #TUDublin #BuildingTheFuture #IGBC

🇪🇪 Introducing the #DrasticProject’s Estonian Demonstrator! 🇪🇪 🌡 82% of dwellings in Estonia currently have low energy performance. The Estonian Demonstrator's goal is to validate a complete deep energy renovation of an existing apartment building in Rapla, Estonia, using circular principles, thereby reducing the building’s overall energy consumption. 🏗 Via new methods of disassembly and reassembly of wall and roof panels, the Estonian Demonstrator hopes its pioneering circular solution will be commercially exploited as a viable offering for the renovation of Northern European apartment buildings. Drastic is a pioneering initiative that aims to demonstrate affordability, sustainability and circularity within the built environment via a collection of innovative European pilot projects known as 'Demonstrators’. 📽 Watch below to learn more about Drastic’s Estonian Demonstrator: https://bit.ly/3A8Pj9q ➡ Learn more about this Demonstrator: https://bit.ly/4fg3fNF #CircularEconomy #BuildingTheTransition World Green Building Council, European Commission, Sorigué, Adec Global SL, Alliance HQE - GBC, CELSA GROUP, Saint-Gobain, TECNALIA Research & Innovation, ICADE, LEZAMA DEMOLICIONES, Madaster, Omtre, Produktif, TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, Timbeco, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Maastricht Sustainability Institute, VITO, CAALA
