Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh ☘️ We’re celebrating University Research on Irish Language and Culture for #SeachtainNaGaeilge At a point in time when the Irish language was in serious decline, the Irish Folklore Commission set out to collect audio and film recordings, manuscripts and rare printed materials to document the older cultural patterns and practices of Ireland. This UNESCO recognised rare collection is housed at University College Dublin (UCD) and many items are now digitised, providing a precious resource for researchers, artists and the public. In this video we meet celebrated musician Éamonn Cagney, who is a UCD Joseph Hassett Bursary Winner, currently conducting research with audio and texts on percussion in folk tradition from the National Folklore Collections. https://lnkd.in/eKZiFwPR #SeachtainNaGaeilge #IrishCulture #IrishUniversities #UniversityResearch UCD Research, Gaeltacht UCD, UCD Global Centre for Irish Language & Culture

Seachtain na Gaeilge is an annual international festival promoting the Irish language and culture.🇮🇪 In celebration of this, we’re exploring some fascinating research which looks at a variety of subjects such as Modern Irish and language policy, Irish Folklore and more... University College Dublin Library houses rare texts such as the original 17th century manuscript of The Great Book of Irish Genealogies, the largest surviving body of Irish genealogical lore. Irish language scripts inform our perceptions of early Irish history.📚 Prof Meidhbhín Ní Úrdail is a world expert in Ireland's vernacular written tradition from medieval times to the 19th century and contemporary Irish writing heritage. She works closely with manuscripts from UCD Special Collections with archaeologists, historians, linguists, etymologists, genealogists, writers and musicians to provide context through these sources. 🎓 Experiencing MicroCreds! I have recently completed the Driving Performance with AI and Analytics micro-credential at the Trinity Business School, with the support of the Irish Universities Association, and what a fantastic experience it has been. Having spent the last number of years working to expand micro-credentials as lifelong learning opportunities in Ireland through our work here at MicroCreds, it was invaluable to go through the process myself. These flexible, skills-focused courses are a game-changer for upskilling and professional development. It was fascinating to experience first-hand the impact of micro-credentials—both from a learner’s perspective and in shaping the future of education and work. This course is open currently for applications for the next intake in June 2025, and is also eligible for the Higher Education Authority Micro-credential Learner Fee Subsidy. The representation of women in the Professoriate, will not occur unless the university pays attention to gender representation in the ‘academic pipeline’. University of Galway has accelerated action through a focus on the overall academic pipeline, which has achieved a notable increase of more than 10% across all three of their senior academic grades between 2015/16 and 2022/23. HEA Figures: Percentage Increase/Decrease in Female Academic Staff 2015/16 - 2022/23. University of Galway 🟢 Professor: + 14.4% 🟢 Associate Professor: + 55.7% 🟢 Senior Lecturer: + 13.5% This accelerated improvement in gender balance within the academic pipeline has been achieved through targeted efforts, including a review of the actual promotion process itself, introduction of the University of Galway Preparation for Academic Advancement (PAA) programme, as well as other mentoring and coaching programmes, and careful monitoring of recruitment and promotions data. 🗣️ We're highlighting how IUA Universities #AccelerateAction. ➡️ Maynooth University is #AcceleratingAction by increasing the representation of women at senior academic levels. 🎓 Women are significantly under-represented at Professor (Professor A) level and to address this, Maynooth University secured four new and additional Senior Academic Leadership Initiative Professor A posts in areas where women have historically been under-represented including: Computer Science, Climate Justice, Intersectional Humanities, and Physics. These posts were noted by Maynooth University President, Professor Eeva Leinonen, as being “critical for a fast-growing and ambitious research-intensive University”. https://lnkd.in/eZFWUyac Maynooth University Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
