Earlier this week, our co-founder Clare Ryan had the honour of participating in a panel discussion, hosted by AwakenHub and AwakenAngels, at the Embassy of Ireland, Great Britain in London. The discussions focused on “Shifting the Dial for Irish Women Founders and Investors” with Mary McKenna, MBE, British and European Angel Investor of the Year 2024, hosting the fireside chat. The event, was kindly hosted by Ambassador Martin Fraser, provided a valuable platform to highlight the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs when it comes to launching and securing funding for their start-up. The evening featured discussions on how we can elevate the current figures of just 2% global investment in women-founded companies and encourage more women to diversify into angel investing (currently only 7% of angel investors across Europe identify as female). Clare, alongside Joann Rhodes MBA from Health Innovation Research Alliance Northern Ireland (HIRANI) and Niamh Dooley from BiaSol, shared insights on the challenges and opportunities for women founders, with a focus on life sciences, cybersecurity, and the circular economy for food. The conversation emphasised the importance of both financial and sector-specific knowledge in driving success for early-stage start-ups, and showcased the importance of new angel investors to the sector. Thanks to Denise McQuaid, Clare McGee, Sinead Crowley and the wider AwakenHub and AwakenAngels team, and everyone who made this event possible. It’s inspiring to see such dedication to fostering a more inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. And a special thanks to all of the start-up founders and supporters who took time to join us at the event. Its well known that women are under represented in the cybersecurity industry. As one of a growing number of female led cyber start-ups, its important that we use our voice to encourage other in the sector and celebrate loudly the successes of others who walk the journey with us. We we're thrilled to hear that our CEO Clare Ryan was shortlisted for the wonderful award. Awards like this are not just a 'one-off event', the networking that happens at event often have a far-reaching impact for those who attend. The life experiences, enthusiasm and sheer determination that other women share has a lasting impact helping to drive others forward. Congratulations again to our colleagues at Sitehop Fortify Institute and The Zensory on their awards. Paul Daly
What a wonderful night I had at ‘The Most Inspiring Women in Cyber’ awards in #London yesterday evening. The awards brought together the top 35 Most Inspiring Women in cyber which were shortlisted from more than 100 entries and I was delighted to be nominated in the group. The night was an uplifting and inspiring session where we heard from 🐡 Lucy Finlay, Jessica Moffatt-Owen, Stephanie Itimi, Zoe Mackenzie and Aurorah Smith (Cheney) talk about their ‘squiggly career paths’ that brought them to working in #cyber. The group also chatted openly about the challenges women face while building a career particularly in cyber (and offered a number of alternative solutions that employers should consider to help increase the presence of women in senior cyber leadership). 🎉 Congratulations to Melissa Chambers, Jan Carroll MSc, MEd on their awards and to Jasmine Eskenzi who was one of 5 early career women identified as rising stars 🚀 . Thank you to BT Group, Plexal, Redflags and Eskenzi PR and Marketing for sponsoring and hosting such a wonderful event.
