  • #ICYMI - L&DI Budget Response Ms Sinead Heneghan, CEO of L&DI, welcomes the education and training measures announced in Budget 2025. These include the utilisation of the National Training Fund for a funding package of €1.485bn over six years (2025-2030) for the tertiary sector, comprising:  €650m core funding package for Higher Education, addressing Funding the Future by increasing core funding by a further €150m by 2030.   €600m capital uplift, including €150m to provide essential training facilities in Veterinary, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dentistry. €150m for the Further Education and Training sector. €150 million for the Research sector. €235m for the tertiary sector as one-off current funding including skills and apprenticeships.  €20 million has been released from the NTF for a skills package that will increase investment in employment-focused skills and training, assisting and enhancing the competitiveness and productivity of businesses. This includes funding of €5 million for meeting existing and future construction and green skills needs and national housing and climate action targets.    Additional welcome education and training measures are:          €73 million investment in craft apprenticeships and developing new apprenticeships. Craft apprenticeships are expected to grow to 6,800 registrations in 2025, and this funding will help ensure that the skills requirements of industry, particularly the construction sector, are met while also growing consortia-led apprenticeships and developing cross-border apprenticeships. €4 million to enable the transition to a single apprenticeship system through essential IT and quality assurance development.  €5 million for measures to enhance support for students with disabilities. €20 million for a skills package in employment-focused skills and training, with a particular focus on assisting small, medium and micro companies.   €16.4 million to increase the number of places across veterinary, medicine and other healthcare disciplines. The L&DI welcomes Budget 2025 additional funding for 768 additional special education teachers and 1,600 more Special Needs Assistants. Early education intervention is essential for ensuring improved educational outcomes. Sinead Heneghan commented, “L&DI support continuing investment in upskilling and reskilling and access to quality training and education opportunities to ensure that enterprises' skill needs are met and employees' skills are 'future-proofed'. Lifelong learning is essential, as workers must continuously upgrade, reskill, or expand their skills over their work lives to avoid skills obsolescence and sustain employment. There is also a need for a continuing focus on actions to improve the access and participation of persons with a disability to work.” #Budget25 #Learning #Development
