At MedTech Pulse, we love when startups tackle cancer care. Especially when they do it from a less-conventional angle. Startup Luminate Medical aims to transform cancer care—but not through the traditional biotech drug discovery or detection paths. They’re here to make one of the worst parts of cancer treatment, chemotherapy, suck a little less. Luminate’s Lily helmet helps chemo patients prevent associated hair loss. Amazing to have Luminate Medical featured in CNN this week! 🚀 I spent some time talking to Jacopo Prisco about our continued progress towards US clinical trials which are kicking off later this year. Was super proud to see clinicians in the article recognising the value of reducing chair time in clinic and moving more patients home sooner. If you’re interested in building the future of cancer treatment with us, we’re hiring! See https://lnkd.in/ePsQj9ZM for more. Article: https://lnkd.in/eahAbubM

ARTIS Ventures recently led a $15M Series A into Luminate Medical, led by Aaron Hannon. We're excited at their potential to transform the chemotherapy treatment process by reducing side effects for patients, lowering costs for payers, and unlocking value for private practice oncologists across the United States. Welcome to the Artis portfolio family!
Announcing the future of cancer treatment: delivering cancer therapies at home. Super excited to reveal Luminate Medical's $15m Series A led by ARTIS Ventures, with participation from Metaplanet, Lachy Groom and 8VC, alongside some excellent angel investors and our existing investors SciFounders and Faber. We're able to announce this funding off the back of successful clinical results using our technologies to prevent hair loss and peripheral neuropathy during chemotherapy. This round marks a big shift for Luminate: it allows us to pursue our vision of delivering cancer treatment at home. Building on our technologies to prevent the side effects of cancer treatment, we're working on new products to help deliver low-risk anti-cancer treatments and pre-treatment procedures outside of the clinic. We want to help patients spend more time at home, and physicians spend more time focused on high value procedures that make a real impact on patient outcomes. A huge thanks to our amazing team at Luminate: including founders Barbara Oliveira and Martin OHalloran, our fantastic management team Ellen Cahill, PhD, Aaron McCormack, EMMET FRAWLEY and newly added Conor Macken, and our super talented R&D, Clinical, Quality and Ops groups. I'm super lucky to work with all of you. Also a big thanks to everyone who has supported us, old and new - especially Matt Krisiloff, Alexander Schubert, Alexandre Barbosa, Sofia Santos, Niall McEvoy, Barry Regan, Austin Walne, Vasudev Bailey and so many more. There are too many to mention, but you know who you are! https://lnkd.in/ecDmn-CX

Luminate Medical (YC S21) has raised $15 million in Series A funding to make medical devices that stop the side effects of cancer treatment. Their first product, Lily, is a wearable cap that enables chemotherapy patients to prevent hair loss in a comfortable, portable way. The helmet applies even pressure on the scalp to block capillaries, stopping the harmful chemotherapy from reaching hair follicles. In initial tests, this method helped 75% of users keep their hair. "We’ve had patients finish four to 12 chemo treatments and keep a full head of hair. There’s been incredible feedback about how it’s changed their experience of going through treatment," said co-founder and CEO Aaron Hannon. The tests also showed that there were few, if any, safety, comfort, or device issues, and that wearing the helmet for longer actually improved outcomes. The next step is a multi-center study in the U.S. for FDA clearance. The team also found that pressure technology could help reduce chemo-induced neuropathy, which is nerve damage in the extremities. Their next medical device, Lilac, works like a precision compression sock or glove to provide more accurate and consistent pressure. It's the world's first device to prevent peripheral nerve damage caused by cancer treatment. Congrats Aaron, Barbara Oliveira, and the entire team at Luminate on the Series A! https://lnkd.in/gK8eJaJ4

If there is one thing you can say for Aaron Hannon, the chief executive of Luminate Medical, it is that he doesn’t lack ambition. “Our long term vision is that we want to deliver every cancer treatment at home, rather than in clinical settings as is typically the case now,” he says.
