This morning, saw the launch of the Meat Industry Ireland Charter for Sustainable Irish Beef by Minister Charlie McConalogue. The Charter identifies key priorities for MII's beef processing members, such as increased investment, enhanced reporting and the implementation of methane mitigating breeding strategies. The Charter commits our members to accelerating the decarbonisation of beef production and encouraging best practice among their suppliers. It also requires them to protect the natural environment and deliver broad-based benefits for society while remaining profitable, maintaining livelihoods and enhancing food security. A panel of industry experts detailed the sustainability efforts undertaken in their supply chains, including learnings from their demonstration farms, regenerative agricultural practices and ambitious decarbonisation strategies. Follow this link to access the Charter, our accompanying Sustainability Progress Report for Irish Beef 2024 and watch our Sustainable Irish Beef Stories video series. https://lnkd.in/eytZCCty Christopher Mc Gowan Rebecca Thomson MSc, BSc Gill Higgins Stephen Connolly Dale Crammond Philip Carroll Síle Sweeney Padraig Brennan

MII and its members are committed to accelerating sustainability progress and working towards the targets outlined in the National Climate Action Plan. Since 2015 MII members have invested more than €200 million in sustainability initiatives at processor and farm level. MII have just launched a 4 part video series in collaboration with ABP Food Group, Liffey Meats, Kepak Group and Dawn Meats which serve to illustrate the large-scale sustainability initiatives being implemented by the wider beef industry, check out the videos at the link below. https://lnkd.in/eytZCCty Dale Crammond Philip Carroll Síle Sweeney Emma Dunne

Our chair Philip Carroll was delighted to participate in various engagements this week concinding with the visit of senior EU Commission officials to showcase the sector’s efforts to improve water quality and ensure the renewal of Nitrates derogation post 2025. The advantages of Ireland’s grass based production system were communicated as was the integrated nature of the dairy and beef sectors. This is not just about 7000 derogation farmers, it is much more complex than this. MII members are committed to working with all stakeholders, including their farmer suppliers, to improve water quality. Working closely with Dairy Industry Ireland and the Farm Organisations, we were pleased to see our common objectives paper launched this week. #derogation #waterquality #agriculture #sustainability

Director Dale Crammond shares some thoughts from this week’s trade mission to China and Korea…..
I was in #Seoul this week for the launch of #Irishbeef. This launch was the culmination of a significant effort by so many people, which started back in 2010, a fourteen year project. The Korean beef import market is heading towards a 500,000 tonne market, with Australia and the US dominating the trade. Koreans eat 15kg of beef per annum, with total meat consumption of 60kg per annum when pork and chicken are taken into account. It is interesting that Brazil does not have access, which helps keep a good floor in the price. Koreans are 40% self sufficient in beef production, thus clearly creating an import demand making them the fourth largest importer of beef globally. Most of the beef coming into the country is grain fed, with the exception of some Australian imports. Market research indicates Korean consumers are keen to try grass fed Irish beef, with naturalness and ‘more healthy’ being regularly identified as key reasons of interest. During the visit, #BordBia did a great job with their launch seminar on Thursday. The back and forth between Angus Woods, Wicklow beef farmer, and Mark Zieg highlighting the key strengths of Irish beef really resonated with the audience. A tasting reception took place afterwards and again it was top class. On the Friday, ABP launched a retail tie up with K meats, a high end retailer in Korea with a presence online also. However, I know Dawn, Kepak and Liffey are also active in the market. We need to get more plants approved to take advantage of this opportunity. Overall, a positive development, patience is now needed to allow the trade to grow. Thanks to Minister Charlie McConalogue the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine staff and Bord Bia for this week’s launch. They were ably supported by the Embassy in Seoul. I want to also acknowledge role of Commissioner Dombrovskis and other EU Commission staff for all they did to help secure access over many years. Earlier in the week, I was in Shanghai. The focus here is expanding the market access available to my members, offal access and bone-in are critical to expand the trade. Given the scale of the country, it’s impossible to ignore China, but it remains a work in progress. However, members remain engaged so that they can take advantages of any opportunities in the future. #sustainableirishbeef #trademission #seoul #shanghai #bordbia

MII is delighted that the South Korean beef market is finally open to a number of our members. This export opportunity has been a long time in the making and suffered many false dawns! However, the significant work done behind the scenes by many organisations and individuals over many years has now paid off. Our objective now is to get remaining interested plants approved as quickly as possible in order to maximise the trading opportunity over the coming years. Special thanks to Charlie McConalogue and the team in Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Trade is critical to our industry so today was a good day. #irishbeef #southkorea #trade
