  • A huge congratulations to Colin Clarke, PI in the Systems Biology and Data Analytics Group, and his team on their high-impact publication in Nature Communications. In this ground-breaking study, led by senior research scientist Ioanna Tzani, the team identified thousands of previously unannotated CHO open reading frames (ORFs). Their work significantly advances MS-based Host Cell Protein (HCP) detection, enabling the identification of microprotein impurities in antibody drug products - an important breakthrough for improving drug safety and quality. https://lnkd.in/gFa-66Fj This important research was made possible with support from Research Ireland. Manufacturing Process Technician (Inspection)

A Valuable Skillset for the Growing Biopharmaceutical Industry I recently completed the Certificate in Science Biopharmaceutical Processing, a program developed in collaboration with the biopharmaceutical industry in Ireland. 1. Upstream Processing: This module introduced the fundamental processes involved in the early stages of biopharmaceutical production, including cell culture. I gained an in-depth understanding of how living cells are cultivated to produce active proteins. The practical lab sessions allowed me to acquire hands-on experience in the precise monitoring and control required for successful bioproduction. 2. Downstream Processing: In the Downstream Processing module, the focus shifted to the purification and separation of the biopharmaceutical products from the cellular material produced in upstream processes. I learned techniques such as filtration, chromatography, and clarification, which are critical to ensuring the purity, quality, and stability of the final product.  3. Sterile Fill Finish: This module provided invaluable insights into the final stages of biopharmaceutical production—sterile fill finish. It emphasized the importance of sterility in handling, filling, and packaging drug products. I learned about the necessary aseptic techniques and how to maintain sterile conditions to prevent contamination of the final biopharmaceutical products.  4. Bioanalytics: Bioanalytics was another key component of the course, focusing on physicochemical and biological analysis of the drug before license is granted. I was introduced to techniques like HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) , protein estimation assays, which are essential in assessing the quality, potency, and purity of biopharmaceuticals. This module gave me a solid grounding in the scientific methods used to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. The program also emphasized the importance of adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), which is a critical requirement for working in biopharmaceutical production environments. Understanding these regulatory frameworks has given me a solid foundation to pursue a career in this field with confidence. Conclusion This course has not only enhanced my technical competencies but has also broadened my understanding of the industry’s regulatory landscape and the stringent quality standards that govern biopharmaceutical production.  The practical skills I’ve gained through the course have been instrumental in securing my current position as a Manufacturing Technician/Inspector in the biopharmaceutical sector, and I am truly grateful for this opportunity. I would like to extend my thanks to ATU Sligo, Springboard, and NIBRT for providing such a valuable and career-enhancing program.
