Obton Ltd is a Joint Venture between Shannon Energy and Obton A/S to develop solar projects in Ireland.

About us

Obton are working with Shannon Energy to deliver up to 1GW MWp of renewable energy in Ireland by 2030. Our goal is to assemble a diverse portfolio of projects that will provide a supply of solar-generated electricity for many years to come. In 2020 we reached an important milestone when we were awarded our first 11 projects in the Government of Ireland’s Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS). The first 5 projects are under construction now and will be energised in 2024. These solar farms will be able to power approximately 20,000 homes across Ireland. A further 30MW was awarded in RESS3 and will also be constructed in 2024.

Why is it important for us to consider 'badgers' when designing a solar farm in Ireland? Well, there are several factors: 1.    Legal Protection: Badgers are a protected species under Irish law, specifically the Wildlife Act 1976 and the European Communities (Birds and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011. Any potential impact on their habitats must be assessed and mitigated. 2.    Ecological Importance: Badgers are part of the broader ecosystem, and their presence can indicate a healthy environment. Protecting their habitats helps maintain biodiversity, which is vital for ecological balance. 3.    Habitat Conservation: Solar park designs should avoid disrupting badger setts (burrows) and foraging areas. This requires careful planning and potentially the implementation of buffer zones to protect these habitats. 4.    Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs): In Ireland, many solar projects require an EIA, which must include potential impacts on local wildlife, including badgers. This assessment is crucial for compliance and to inform mitigation strategies. 5.    Community Engagement: Recognizing the presence of badgers and other wildlife can foster positive relationships with local communities, who may be more supportive of renewable energy projects that demonstrate environmental stewardship. By addressing these factors, solar park developers in Ireland can create projects that are not only efficient in energy production but also considerate of local wildlife and ecosystems.

I am often asked what are the compelling benefits for landowners to lease their land solar in Ireland with Obton, one of Europe's leading developers, so here they are:- 1. Proven Expertise: Obton is an established player in the solar energy sector, having successfully developed numerous projects across Europe, including in Ireland. Their experience means they are well-equipped to handle the complexities of solar development efficiently. 2. Reliable Income Stream: By leasing your land, you can secure a steady income through lease payments. This financial benefit can be particularly valuable for landowners looking to diversify their income sources. 3. Low Maintenance Responsibility: Once the lease is signed, Obton takes care of the project’s development, installation, and maintenance. This allows you to maintain ownership of your land without the burden of managing a solar farm. 4. Sustainable Land Use: Solar farms can coexist with agricultural activities, allowing you to continue farming or grazing on the land while also generating income from solar development. This dual-use approach can maximize the utility of your land. 5. Contributing to Renewable Energy: Leasing your land for solar development supports the transition to renewable energy, helping to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability in your community. 6. Long-term Contracts: Solar leases are typically long-term agreements, providing financial stability and predictability for landowners over several years. 7. Increased Land Value: The presence of a solar development can enhance the overall value of your property, making it more attractive in the long run. 8. Community and Economic Benefits: Solar projects often create local jobs during both the construction and operational phases, contributing positively to the local economy. 9. Tax Incentives: Depending on local regulations, there may be tax benefits available for landowners who lease their land for solar development, further enhancing the financial appeal. 10. Support from a Trusted Partner: Partnering with a reputable company like Obton ensures that you’re working with a trusted developer that prioritizes transparency and effective communication throughout the project. In summary, leasing your land for solar development with Obton offers financial rewards, environmental benefits, and a partnership with a leading developer, making it an attractive option for landowners in Ireland.
