Earlier this month, Oisín Doherty, Senior Environmental Consultant at ORS, and Luke Martin, Associate Director at ORS, attended the Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) National Bioenergy Conference. The Conference focused on the rapid growth of bioenergy sectors like biomass, biofuels, biogas/biomethane, and biochar. Here, Oisín shares a summary of some of the key takeaways from the conference. IrBEA president Paddy Phelan emphasised the widening gap between Ireland’s renewable energy targets and actual progress. He called for urgent action on government roadmaps, including the Biomethane Strategy, and stressed the need for supporting policies and funding. There are concerns that Ireland may fail to meet its 2030 renewable energy target of 43.5%, risking EU fines. Bioenergy is essential for reaching these goals. IrBEA CEO Seán Finan stressed the need for more policy intervention to drive market certainty for bioenergy. He urged the next government to recognise Ireland’s bioenergy potential and lead efforts to meet renewable energy goals. He emphasised that biofuels make up 58% of all renewable energy in the EU, yet receive far less attention than solar and wind. He stressed the need for stricter enforcement of regulations on feedstock sourcing. Minister Ossian Smyth opened the Conference and noted that Ireland ranks low in the EU for bioenergy, with only 5% of its energy coming from bioenergy compared to the EU average of 25%. He mentioned that the Renewable Heat Obligation (RHO) regulations were delayed until the end of the year, and that the RHO requirement would be phased in at 10% over three years. David Kelly (Gas Networks Ireland) discussed the vast potential of biomethane, highlighting that two-thirds of Ireland’s gas is used for electricity generation. He pointed out that biomethane could be a major replacement but emphasized that long-term support is necessary to boost the industry. GNI is focused on developing the biomethane sector and implementing the National Biomethane Strategy, alongside initiatives like the Renewable Heat Obligation (RHO). Professor Gert-Jan Nabuurs (Wageningen University & Research) provided an insightful presentation on the role of land and forests in carbon sequestration. He cautioned that while land and forests are significant carbon sinks, climate change is reducing their ability to sequester carbon effectively. Our teams participated in fire warden training and first aid training while we also focused on mental health, promoting well-being and the importance of support on and off-site.
