Raretec Recruitment Ltd reposted this
(It's a little long but a worrying, worthwhile read) No New Data Centre Investment for Ireland Until Wind Strategy Sorted, Says Amazon Web Services (AWS) At Amazon’s 20th anniversary event in Ireland, senior executives shed light on major issues impacting the country's future in the tech landscape. A key topic of concern was the lack of new data centre investment in Ireland, which could cost the country billions compared to other European nations. Neil Morris, AWS Country Lead for Ireland, emphasized that Amazon has announced over €30bn in data centre investment across Europe, including Spain, Germany, France, and the UK. However, he highlighted that Ireland is at risk of missing out on the next wave of investment unless it addresses critical energy policy issues. “We want to continue growing here, but we need a sustainable framework,” said Morris. He pointed to offshore wind energy as a pivotal factor, urging the country to develop a robust energy policy to attract multinational investment, including from Amazon. Dublin Lord Mayor James Geoghegan also voiced frustration over the planning refusals for new data centres in Ireland, largely due to insufficient electricity capacity and the lack of renewable energy on-site. Meanwhile, Enterprise Ireland CEO, Leo Clancy, pointed out that 18,000 jobs in Ireland are tied to data centre construction, underlining the economic importance of these projects. While Amazon continues to expand across Europe, including an £8bn investment in UK data centres, Ireland’s potential for similar growth hinges on resolving energy infrastructure challenges. As data centres become critical national infrastructure globally, the need for strategic planning in renewable energy has never been clearer. Ireland has a unique opportunity to lead in cloud infrastructure investment, but the window may close without swift action on energy policy. The message from Amazon is clear: if Ireland wants to attract data centre investment, it must prioritize renewable energy, particularly offshore wind, and create the right conditions for multinational growth. #DataCentres #RenewableEnergy #AI #Amazon #IrelandEconomy #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/ed5jY34A
