In October 2023, Storm Babet brought heavy rain and flooding across Ireland with Cork City one of the worst affected areas. In this video you can clearly see how businesses in Cork City are having to adapt to more extreme weather events as a result of our changing climate. Marilyn Latchford, Shirley Gallagher, Lord Mayor Cllr Dan Boyle President Prof John O’Halloran, Dr Vliexs, were speaking tonight in Cork city hall on the actual anniversary of the very first Toastmasters International meeting. It was an eclectic meeting with delegates from Canada, USA, and the various corners of Ireland. We covered a lot of ground from family, toastmasters, stories and sustainability. Dr Dewi from South East Energy Agency shared about her role as the project officer supporting Irish EU climate pact ambassadors. The importance of engaging at community level. the Lord Mayor visits 120 schools in the first quarter, which are impressive stats on any level. Family members of one of the first cork club’s founding fathers, the late Con O Connor. Dennis O'Connor brought artefacts from the first charter dinner in 1968, Photos and speeches. His sister Mary P O Connor was fabulous as our press photographer, corralling as needed. Sister Nuala shared happy memories of the gavel, sitting on top of the TV and the honour of winning it as a child. Thanks to the toastmasters who showed up and gave support and for cork city council for hosting the event. It was much appreciated. Especially Moira O'Brien with her 3 way camera system, our interviews with be fabulous. Tonight we spoke about legacy, the importance of commmunicating even though you may not agree with the other side, you can agree to differ. Professor O’Halloran said it beautifully ’diversity begets stability’. He was speaking as an ecologist and about human relations. It’s something I will bring with me tomorrow to Historic Houses of Ireland event in Athy with Carina Conyngham Brian O'Toole Thomas Emmet. With the question ‘what is your legacy?’
