Yesterday, the European Commission published two important communications: the #CleanIndustrialDeal and the #AffordableEnergyActionPlan, both aimed at ensuring European competitiveness ⚡️ ‘Boosting innovation’ was announced as an important element of the forthcoming #EuropeanGridsPackage. In addition to this, the #AffordableEnergyActionPlan rightly recognizes grid enhancing technologies as a massive opportunity to boost grid capacity and reduce the cost of much-needed grid expansion for all Europeans. Innovation is one of the key pillars of the #CompetitivenessCompass, and closing the Innovation Gap is one of the priorities highlighted in the Draghi Report. Europe must remain vigilant that innovation is not considered only as a “longer term structural measure”, but that sufficient focus is placed on actually deploying the innovation that has already been developed, particularly if it can bring benefits starting today and the solutions are significantly less resource intensive. The European Commission has unveiled "The Clean Industrial Deal", a new overarching growth strategy establishing electrification and grids as essential for Europe's future competitiveness. Supported by an "Action Plan on Affordable Energy", this initiative integrates climate action and industrial competitiveness to build “a sustainable future for manufacturing in Europe – economically, environmentally, and socially.” SuperNode Chief Public Affairs Officer, Christian Kjaer said: “The European Commission has rightly recognised that access to indigenous, renewable electricity, delivered through a rapidly expanding, interconnected, modern grid, is a precondition for a competitive Europe. For SuperNode, a manufacturer of innovative high-capacity grid technology, the European Commission’s focus on grids, manufacturing, innovation, circularity and scale-up are highly welcome.” Notable takeaways include: ✅ A 90% greenhouse gas reduction target, driven by "competitive manufacturers leading decarbonisation through innovation". ✅ A commitment to increase electrification from 21.3% to 32% by 2030 and install 100 GW of renewable electricity annually from 2030. ✅ A European Grids Package (2026) to ensure integrated, cross-border grid planning. ✅ A new Competitiveness Fund to support clean tech. ✅ A TechEU investment programme to scale-up companies which invest in innovative technologies. Christian Kjaer, SuperNode concluded: “The Commission has provided an escape route out of Europe’s competitive disadvantage, through an aggressive overhaul of Europe’s energy market. It will not be achieved without significant changes to the governance framework for pan-European grid planning, and the development of new, credible energy scenarios that meet all policy objectives.” Read our full response here: https://lnkd.in/eferW8kv

"[We will need] a more intensive, smart, and effective use of the grids and energy infrastructure if we want to lower the fixed costs of our system" said Commission EVP Teresa Ribera today in the press conference presenting the Clean Industrial Deal. 💪 Happy to see that the text on the grids package includes a focus to boost innovation: "An efficient network system ensures that energy flows from where it is produced to where it is needed, ensuring that everyone benefits from energy at the best cost. The Commission will put forward a European Grid Package to, among others, simplify Trans-European Networks for Energy, ensure cross-border integrated planning and delivery of projects, especially on interconnectors, streamline permitting, enhance distribution grid planning, boost digitalisation and innovation as well as increase visibility and prioritisation of manufacturing supply needs, also building on actions from the Grid Action Plan." Also great that the EIB is putting significant funding towards grids manufacturing, and presumably will also include the manufacturing of new and innovative grid technologies: "The EIB will also introduce a ‘Grids manufacturing package’ for the European supply chain to provide counter-guarantees to manufacturers of grid components, with an indicative amount of at least EUR 1.5 billion." 📢 Exciting news ⚡⚡⚡: Scarlet project's Christophe Creusot and his colleagues at SuperGrid Institute recently achieved a world first for applied superconductivity: 50 kV DC breaking using a superconducting fault current limiter in combination with a circuit breaker. 📝 The current was limited by 87% compared with the prospective current - from 43 kAp to 5.5 kA - and the DC circuit-breaker then cut off the remaining current. 🙌 The compact environmentally friendly technology reduces the size of DC protection equipment on the ground by 40-50% and is compatible with both AC and DC networks. 👉 More information at https://lnkd.in/ebfNF7xb #Superconductivity #ElectricityTransmission #Innovation #PowerSector #GreenTransition #EnergyTransition #HVDC SCARLET partners: SINTEF | RIFS Research Institute for Sustainability | at GFZ | WavEC - Offshore Renewables | Institute of Electrical Engineering, Slovak Academy of Sciences | University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna) | Absolut System | ESPCI Paris - PSL | SuperGrid Institute | Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico - RSE SpA | RINA | SuperNode Ltd | VISION ELECTRIC Super Conductors GmbH | ASG Superconductors S.p.A. | Nexans

CurrENT Europe has submitted a response to the European Commission's public consultation on primarily used components under the Net-Zero Industry Act. In its response, CurrENT has called for the inclusion of components in superconducting cable technology, such as those developed by SuperNode, in the list of products and components considered to be used for the production of net-zero technologies. Superconducting cables offer a key solution for grid modernisation. They are more energy-efficient, with high transmission capacity, reduced space requirements, and lower material use compared to traditional cables. By incorporating superconducting technology components into the Net-Zero Industry Act, the EU can support the development and deployment of next-generation grid technologies that enhance resilience, accelerate decarbonisation, and strengthen Europe’s energy independence. #NetZero #CleanEnergy #InnovativeGridTechnology #SuperconductingCables

According to Wind Energy Ireland, wind energy supplied 32% of Ireland’s electricity last year, reducing our gas bill by almost €1 billion. However, we missed out on even greater savings because insufficient grid capacity meant we couldn’t fully capitalise on our windiest months. Ireland still has some of the highest electricity prices in Europe. To bring them down, we must expand grid capacity and improve interconnection with the EU and UK. A UCD study found that a pan-European 'supergrid' could cut energy costs by 32%. Alongside investment in a 'supergrid', we need innovative grid technologies which can complement conventional technologies and prevent future grid bottlenecks. By reinforcing and renewing our electricity grid, we can secure a reliable, renewable, and affordable energy future. #ElectricityGrid #GridBottlenecks #EnergyPrices
