🔴In Guatemala, families are waking up to empty fields and empty stomachs. Severe weather is destroying their crops and their livelihoods. Mothers skip meals just so their children can eat. Fathers are forced to look for work far from home. Families can't afford to send their children to school. 📌Guatemala is among the top ten most vulnerable countries in the world when it comes to climate disasters and emergencies. 📌It has the highest rate of malnutrition in Latin America, with 1 in every 2 children suffering chronic malnutrition. 📌Higher temperatures, water scarcity, droughts, and floods are affecting staple crops. 📌Climate change is fuelling a hunger crisis. But with your support, we can help the most at-risk communities in Guatemala become more resilient to the devastating impacts of climate change and rebuild a better future. Trócaire's Head of Communications Claire Kelly explains how families in Guatemala are being forced to make impossible choices: either food on the table to feed their children or paying school fees. Right now, climate change isn’t just threatening crops, it’s threatening children’s safety and their future. Children like Miriam dream of going to school but increasingly erratic weather and poor harvests mean less income for families. This Lent, you can help families like Miriam’s get the support they need to build a better future for their children. Find out more at trocaire.org/donate. #Guatemala #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

🎬 Behind the scenes: Quizzing Trócaire staff – can you do better? 👉 How much do Trócaire staff really know about the history behind the iconic Trócaire box? The Trócaire Box has been synonymous with Lent in Ireland for over 50 years and a staple in Irish households, churches, schools, and businesses. Can our staff (and you!) rise to challenge and guess the correct year the box is from? Let’s find out! This year’s Trócaire Box tells the story of a family in Guatemala who are struggling to cope with the effects of climate change. Hardworking families like Ilma and Julio’s are being pushed further into poverty by severe and erratic weather damaging their crops and ruining their livelihood. Ilma and Julio must choose between school fees that offer hope for tomorrow, and food for their little ones. Meet the family and learn more about the Trócaire Box Appeal this Lent ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ebXfMnHW 💡 P.S. Did you recognise any of Trócaire box designs? "We lost our home, we were homeless. They were hurting our motherland and we’re trying to save our motherland." Excellent piece by Una Kelly from RTE who joined us in #Guatemala last week highlighting the indigenous resistance to corporate injustices and the challenges of defending land and territories in Guatemala. Indigenous Mayans in the area have called for a halt on multinational companies coming to their communities and extracting resources, resulting in environmental destruction. Trócaire, with the support of IrishAid, provides assistance to local groups to conduct land registry research, with the aim of fending off large corporations that claim rights to traditional indigenous homelands. “The US was one of the big donors for projects in relation to disaster risk reduction and food security… so that space will be empty in some way." Martin Rafael Larrecochea, Trócaire country director for #Guatemala, said this would put more pressure on Trócaire to fill the gap. Martin explains that Guatemala is “highly dependent” on US aid, meaning projects and programmes on disaster risk reduction and food security “are going to suffer”. Trócaire has been working on the ground with local partners to help local communities work towards a more secure future against the ongoing impacts of climate change. Irish Aid also helps Trócaire fund invaluable initiatives that advocate for local communities to keep and protect their lands and oppose attempts by corporations to acquire their land for palm oil plantations, agribusinesses, or other extractive projects. Did you know that women are front and centre to the climate justice movement implementing positive solutions to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis? This International #WomensDay, we are celebrating 3 women that have inspired the world to take a stand for the natural world. 📌 Ineza Umuhoza Grace - Rwanda Ineza Umuhoza Grace is a Rwandan activist with a passion for the environment, feminism and animation! During her time at university, she was selected to be part of a delegation to COP 15 of the United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification. That experience inspired her to find ways to engage more young people in climate action. She founded The Green Protector- a network platform for youth engagement in protecting the environment. The following year, she was selected to be a climate change negotiator for the Rwandan delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. There she provided a key perspective on how climate change was affecting youth in Africa. The Green Protector has become a key partner with Trócaire in #Rwanda, engaging thousands of children and youth in Rwanda and further afield on climate action. 📌 Mary Robinson- Ireland Mary Robinson has championed women’s rights and other progressive causes since the 1970s before being elected as Ireland’s first female President in 1990. President Robinson became the first Head-of-State to visit war-torn Somalia during the devastating famine. The power of her visit and her testimony to the world had a resounding impact and deepened relations between #Ireland and #Somalia for decades to come. As the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Climate Change and more recently as Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate along with Macharia Kamau of Kenya, Mary has helped to focus the world’s attention on the mounting effect of extreme weather events on the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities. Mary Robinson is also co-founder of Project Dandelion a women-led movement for climate justice. 📌 Berta Cáceres – Honduras Berta Cáceres was an indigenous Lenca environmental activist. She co-founded the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH). COPINH became a key partner for Trócaire in the region, providing support to environmental and Human Rights Defenders. Berta led her community’s struggle against deforestation, dam construction and dangerous mining activities on indigenous lands. She successfully waged a grassroots campaign that pressured the world’s largest dam builder to pull out of the Agua Zarca Dam. She was later shot dead in 2016, just for defending indigenous land rights and human rights. 🌍 The research and discovery phase of our work with Trócaire is where we get invited into the stories and the lives of people on the ground in the countries where they operate. For me, Africa in particular has always held a special place in my heart. It’s a continent of extraordinary beauty, warmth, resilience, and spirit, yet time and time again, for a multitude of reasons beyond their own control, these people endure great hardship. 🎥 The work we do isn’t just about documenting this hardship, it’s about bearing witness, amplifying their voices, and sharing the stories of people who refuse to be defined by their struggles. ⚖️Something that really stands out around climate change in Africa is that in it’s continental entirety, it contributes just 3.9% of global emissions and yet it has roughly 20% of the world’s landmass, 18.3% of the world’s population and 17 out of the top 20 most affected countries by climate change. As our narrator so powerfully states, “those least responsible are suffering most.” This campaign takes us to Ethiopia, Malawi, and Guatemala, places where the impact of climate change is not an abstract concept but a daily battle. Drought’s steal livelihoods. Flood’s wash away homes. Families and entire communities are left fighting for survival. But there is hope. Through the relentless efforts of Trócaire and their local partners, support reaches those who need it most. This is the work that matters. These are stories that need to be told.
