We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with our good friend and Vita USA board member, Sr. Rose Dowling from The Franciscan Sisters of Mary. We asked her to define impact investment in her own words, and here’s what she had to say in the video below. Vita, through the Vita Green Impact Fund, aims to provide access to clean water and improved cookstoves to 1.3 million people in East Africa using impact investment funds. About us
Registered Charity Number: 20024192 Vita is a smart, successful and innovative Irish development agency which has been supporting farmers in Ethiopia and Eritrea for almost 30 years. Vita is the Latin word for 'Life', reflecting Vita's focus on sustainable development. Our Work is focused on enabling rural communities to achieve sustainable livelihoods by enhancing access to food, water and renewable energy. We also create income generation opportunities for rural women based around vegetable production and building household assets (i.e. livestock and poultry). Vita leads the Irish Potato Coalition which is currently operating in seven sub Saharan countries and has the potential to transform the lives of more than four million potato farmers. A shining example of Vita's innovation is the Green Impact fund (www.GreenImpactFund.com), a next generation model of social investment which is reducing carbon while transforming the lives of over 200,000 people in East Africa. By working through partnerships in Ireland, Africa and beyond, Vita seeks to form new, mutually beneficial relationships with which to fight hunger and climate change.

Access to food is a human right. Today, on World Food Day, we celebrate the power of sustainable agriculture and the efforts of small-scale farmers who play a crucial role in feeding the world. At Vita, we're proud to support farmers across Africa in their journey to produce more nutritious food, sustainably. Through innovative solutions and community-driven approaches, Vita empowers farmers with the tools, training, and resources they need to boost yields while protecting the environment. From water-efficient irrigation methods to climate-smart farming techniques, we focus on creating resilient food systems that not only increase productivity but also enhance food security for households. As we mark this important day, we recognise that the journey to Zero Hunger begins with the small-scale farmers.

Today, on the International Day of Rural Women, we celebrate the incredible contributions of rural women, who make up around 22% of the global population. These women are the backbone of their communities, playing a crucial role in health, food security, and economic development. Yet, rural women often face significant challenges—higher rates of poverty, limited access to social services, and fewer employment opportunities. Despite these obstacles, their resilience and determination are nothing short of inspiring. As Minister Sean Fleming highlights, investing in women is not just a moral imperative but a catalyst for sustainable development. At Vita, we stand by this belief and are committed to empowering women because we know that when women thrive, their entire communities benefit. 💪🏾
