Walton Institute's Stephen Barnes was delighted to have the opportunity to present NatureWalker at the #BeyondHorizons conference yesterday 🙌 Funded by Sport Ireland’s Innovation Fund and developed by the Mobile Ecosystem and Pervasive Sensing (MEPS) team at Walton Institute, in collaboration with Sports Active Wexford, Wexford Mental Health Services, Coillte, and the Tintern Trails Group, the #NatureWalker mobile-based application comprises 360-degree video capture of the picturesque Tintern Abbey trails, enabling people to virtually visit and explore these scenic surroundings from the comfort of their own homes or while walking outdoors 🍂
Delighted to present #NatureWalker created for and with #SportsActive Wexford at the #BeyondHorizons conference at Sport Ireland yesterday. Along with the mobile app and its fascinating sound design by Dr Christina O'Loughlin. It was great to showcase an early version of the #VR port - for people with mobility issues - developed by James O'Rourke at Walton Institute I really enjoyed the conversations around use cases and look forward to future collaborations. A big thank you to Mike McClure and Ciara M. for the invite

🎉 Congratulations to Rahul Mhapsekar for persevering through a difficult process to reap the rewards of a publication in IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing! A huge amount of effort went into the this paper from Rahul and his co-authors. #publication #agritech #research #phdresearch
PhD researcher at South East Technological University (SETU). Interested in Talking about #IoT #DairyProcessing #Edgecomputing #WirelessSensorNetworks
🌟 Exciting Milestone 🌟 After more than a year of perseverance, patience, and hard work, I’m thrilled to announce that our paper, titled "Application Adaptive Light-Weight Deep Learning (AppAdapt-LWDL) Framework for Enabling Edge Intelligence in Dairy Processing", has been accepted for publication at IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (IF:7.7)! 🎉 The journey was long, with an extensive review process that tested our resilience, but the outcome makes it all worthwhile. This work tackles a key challenge in the dairy industry, which is seeing a rise in data from Edge devices used for milk quality assessment through spectroscopic techniques. Transmitting raw spectral data to the cloud is hindered by bandwidth, memory, and energy limitations. To address this, we developed an Edge-Centric Application-Adaptive Light-Weight Deep Learning (AppAdapt-LWDL) framework for milk species identification and adulteration detection. Our approach employs double model optimization, using low-magnitude pruning and post-training quantization to reduce model size, boost training speed, improve energy efficiency, and enable real-time customization based on application needs. This method achieved up to 59.1% training acceleration for time-sensitive tasks while maintaining 97.5% classification accuracy for accuracy-critical models. The framework demonstrates strong potential for Edge computing, offering efficient, real-time processing on embedded devices, and we look forward to expanding its impact through Federated Learning in the future. A huge thanks to VistaMilk Research Ireland Centre for the funding and support provided for this research and my Supervisors/Mentors Dr. Indrakshi Dey, Dr. LIZY ABRAHAM, Dr. Steven Davy who provided guidance and support throughout this process. Your encouragement kept us going! 🙏 For anyone interested in discussing this work or potential collaborations, feel free to reach out! 🚀 Find out more at : https://lnkd.in/eKw4yZzt #Research #Innovation #Industry40 #AI #IIoT #EdgeComputing #FederatedLearning #MilkQuality #PatienceAndPerseverance #AcademicJourney #PhDThings #waltonInstitute #ScienceFoundationIreland #Vistamilk
