Goldthorpe represents a century-long journey back in time by barleyfield. But how can one bring back the flavours of the past, to be tasted again in the present? The flavours of our latest resurrected barley – Heritage: Goldthorpe – haven’t been tasted in over a century. Yet decades after it was abandoned for the challenges it posed to grow (it can top out at seven feet tall) it was still remembered for its superior quality. As Dr Herbert Hunter, Ireland’s greatest barley breeder put it, ‘it was, and still is, one of the best quality varieties in existence’. Next week you can rediscover that quality for yourself.
