We are excited to share the remarkable success of the #RIWC24 event, hosted by Fighting Blindness at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre in Dublin, from June 5-8, 2024. The Congress brought together top retinal scientists, clinicians, advocacy leaders, and patient representatives, fostering collaboration and innovation in retinal research. We worked closely with our fantastic colleagues at Retina International to bring this event to Dublin. We were delighted to meet RI members from all over the world! 🌟 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻 🌟 I am pleased to share that I received the 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 at the 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 in Dublin last weekend! 🏆 It was a privilege to present my research on 𝑻𝒆𝒔𝒕-𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒗𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒊𝒈𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒔𝒂 among such a dedicated group of inherited retinal degenerations (IRD) scientists, clinicians, and patient advocates from across the globe. I am inspired by the wonderful people I have met, and a special shout-out to the Youth Council of Retina International! I'd like to extend a special thank you to my collaborators Jasleen Kaur Jolly and Maximilian Pfau, and my supervisor Camiel J.F. Boon, who have provided valuable support and insightful guidance throughout this project. A big thank you to Retina International and Fighting Blindness for organizing such an impactful event. It was a privilege to address the impact of visual impairment on school performance at the RIWC24: Retina International World Congress 2024, where I gave a talk titled "Eyes on Education: Exploring the Impact of Visual Impairment on Academic Achievement in School Children." In the Ireland Eye Study, approximately 4% of children attending mainstream school were visually impaired. 60% of 12- to 13-year-olds with visual impairment had either uncorrected or undercorrected myopia, highlighting the importance of myopia mitigation and regular vision checks. Children accept the world the way they see it, and they often do not realise they are shortsighted. There were many RIWC highlights, such as the Visionaries Choir performance. One of the most impactful moments of the RIWC event was hearing attendees' feedback about their experiences living with visual impairment. They shared the challenges they faced in school and stressed the importance of clinicians carefully listening to their visual challenges and requirements, conducting detailed visual task analyses, and showing empathy. It is crucial for all of us in the field to support efforts to prevent future vision loss and stabilise existing conditions.
