We perform High Throughput Functional Phenotyping based on precise sensors. The experimental diagnostic system characterizes the physiological response of the whole-plant to various environmental conditions of hundreds of plants simultaneously.     Have you ever thought of learning about the plant while it’s floating above the ground? This is exactly what Ran Morin, an artist who incorporates botany into his works, did. The sculpture 'Glass-tube Ficus' in China, was created for the LAB GREEN project, where Ran used the image of a test tube. The concept, proven over the statue's four-year existence, is to observe root development alongside leaf and branch growth, with roots filling the large ‘test tube.’ Our PlantArray system allowed them to optimize #irrigation and monitor all essential growth conditions: #Humidity (in the upper and lower container areas), #Lighting, and #Salinity. "This control was especially important, as the statue sits on the 17th floor in an air-conditioned, artificially lit space. With #PlantArray system, we determined optimal light, irrigation, temperature, and humidity—enabling a large tree to thrive in entirely artificial conditions," reported Ran. The system also enables remote interaction with the tree, crucial during the pandemic when the project began.     How to Efficiently Conduct a Drought Experiment? The protocol 👇 The editors of the Journal of Experimental Botany (JXB) often receive manuscripts on drought tolerance and plant responses to water deficit that suffer from flawed experimental designs, inconsistent terminology, overinterpretation of data, or unrealistic lab-to-field extrapolations. To address these issues, the JXB Editorial Board established a working group to provide guidelines for better experimental design, data interpretation, and reporting of results, particularly in experiments performed under so-called ‘controlled conditions.’ In these guidelines, the editors offer advice on improving experiment design, data interpretation, and result reporting. In any plant stress experiment, the variables measured should be selected according to the specific requirements of the experiment. These variables may cover molecular, biochemical, physiological, and morphological aspects. While visual images can be useful for illustrating the impact of stress on the overall appearance of the plant, they alone may lead to superficial or incorrect conclusions. In contrast, incorporating physiological measurements such as growth, transpiration, and water potential is strongly recommended to assess stress levels. These parameters occupy a higher place in the response hierarchy and are typically the first to show changes.     🌿 How do poplar trees handle drought? 🌿 Carbohydrates are believed to play a major role in osmotic adjustment in plants, and under drought stress, this becomes even more critical. Will poplar trees with a limited ability to accumulate sugars in their leaves respond differently to drought? 🤔 At the Weizmann Institute of Science, guided by Prof. Tamir Klein and Dr. Rakefet David-Schwartz and in collaboration with Hagar Fox, the researchers are testing such poplars under full irrigation and drought conditions to examine how their ability to accumulate sugars affects their response. Using the PlantArray system, researchers can calculate the daily transpiration rate for each plant and establish a personalized irrigation program designed to achieve the same level of stress across all plants. Later, they will also be able to compare the water use efficiency and recovery rates between wild-type (WT) and low-sugar poplars. Our cutting-edge system, the #PlantArray, allows us to track each tree's daily transpiration rate and design personalized irrigation programs to ensure consistent stress levels across all plants.
