The US, EU and UK recently signed the world's first legally binding international treaty relating to the use and development of AI. This document (the AI Convention) enshrines commitments to human rights, democracy and the rule of law, among other principles, relating to AI. Given how hard these commitments are to enforce, the treaty is itself mostly symbolic. But it is still important. Like the EU AI Act, the AI Convention looks to broadly frame how we approach and use AI in a way that promotes fairness, does not hurt the consumer and does not lean into darker elements of AI development currently seen as real, if existential risks. While the AI convention does not have the heft and detail of the EU AI Act, or true enforcement mechanisms, it is a moral downpayment on what good should look like as we continue to move into a world more reliant on AI.
