NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration at their June meeting were focused on reviewing how public safety drones can be used for search-and-rescue, accident scene reconstruction, and situational awareness during fires and other emergencies. At Strix Drones we are addressing these challenges by developing universal drone docking stations that can store specialized #searchandrescue drones charged and ready-to-go for long periods of time in remote areas such as national parks and forests. Big News Today! The Federal Aviation Administration has released a draft environmental assessment for proposed commercial drone deliveries in several areas across the USA. Some of the companies that were granted provisional approvals (subject to public review) include: DroneUp , Amazon Prime Air , Google's Wind and the Florida Power and Light Company (FPL). Drones Delivery for Meals – Is this Economic? While drone technology promises to revolutionize retail logistics with efficiency and environmental benefits, the current economic reality is more complex. (See links) At approximately $13.50 per single-package delivery (according to a McKinsey study - see below), drones are not yet cost-competitive with traditional methods like trucks although it does offer a reduction for traffic and pollution... Regulatory requirements for individual drone monitoring and visual observation dramatically inflate labor costs, accounting for up to 95% of delivery expenses. These prices also do not include the amortization costs of the Drones, the operating costs of the air traffic systems and maintenance, all assumed to be amortized into the costs of 1000’s of flights. Consequently, for drones to become operationally and economically viable solution, two significant advancements in technology and regulations are needed: 1.       Moving from manual to autonomous flight so a single remote operator and air traffic system, will enable a single operator to manage up to 15~ 20 drones simultaneously - all flying to and from the Vertiports and;   2.       For a scalable way to Load, Take-Off, Land, Store and Charge the drones in a secure location, with the packages loading and retrieval to be done in a safe and hands-free environment. To summary, While the hype is high around this topic, It does not seem to be practical to acquire 10,000~20,000 dollar drones fleet and build a full drone Airport for each hamburger joint and for each Chinese takeaway. Scalable food delivery models should separate the meals, packaging from the Drone systems so drone operations and food operations should interface fast but with minimum friction. The Drone system should be able to take-off, fly to pick-up the package and deliver it with a centralized air traffic "orchestrating" it autonomously.    Strix Drones currently delivers two of these necessary components: The universal Drone docking station and; The Vertipad for safe take-off, landing and handling of the packages. Strix Drones are currently seeking Drone manufacturers and Air Traffic Controllers to join this vision where food and other producers of FMCG and CPG will be able to join the eco-system and offer an economic solution to this promising sector. This announcement follows years of research and testing into the key issue that was holding back the delivery industry - Air Traffic Control procedures and reporting regulate the take-off, route tracking and the safe landing for autonomous drones, it also governs all the critical safety protocols needed to fly such services above urban routes. Drone flights for everyday delivery application must have approvals to fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) to make them an economic viable option. Such a service heavily depends on the safety of the Drones used (type approval) and the universal regulation of the Air Traffic. While drones are now available for flights up to 10-20 km and 1 hour flight with up to 10kg. loads (enough to deliver a few hot pizzas!...) the issue of flight control was in the making for a few years now. The recent news that FAA has stepped in with clear air traffic standards is very welcome. Companies like Strix Drones provide an essential 'Glue' to the delivery ecosystem. Strix Drones offers both Universal Drone Docking Stations (UDDS) that can integrate with any drone, charge it and protect it between flights and, the Secure Delivery Hubs or (Vertiports) so the autonomous drones can land safely, release their packages into secure storage and take off without the need to have a human pilot to guide the process.
