It's Here: Tesla Reveals Cybertruck's Final Price and Specs as Deliveries Begin
The stainless steel electric truck has begun deliveries to paying customers.
Tesla has officially launched the Cybertruck, its long-anticipated electric pickup truck, handing off the first production units to customers at a delivery event today at the company's Giga Texas manufacturing plant. Two versions will be available: a dual-motor configuration, priced at $79,990 that gets 340 miles of range and goes from 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds, and a tri-motor performance spec priced at $99,990 that gives the Cybertruck 320 miles of range and sprints it from 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds.
Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has recently faced an advertiser boycott on X/Twitter over his endorsement of antisemitic conspiracy theories, confirmed that the full-size, stainless steel EV truck had over 1 million reservations, which require prospective customers to put down a refundable $100 deposit in order to secure a place in line. Musk has repeatedly said that Tesla aims to produce 250,000 Cybertrucks per year once production is fully ramped up, with that milestone anticipated to be reached in 2025. This would place it firmly in the middle of Tesla's all-EV lineup, production-wise, with the Model S luxury sedan and Model X SUV combining for about 100,000 units per year, and the more affordable Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover SUV combining for approximately 1.7 million units in 2023.
Tesla has also been in limited production on the Tesla Semi, an all-electric Class 8 semi truck, since December of 2022. Approximately 70 units have been produced so far, all for PepsiCo.
The Cybertruck has been polarizing from the start
The Cybertruck's unique design has been polarizing since it was first unveiled in November 2019, with a brutalist look necessitated by its thick stainless steel exoskeleton that Tesla claims is resistant to dents as well as small-caliber bullets. The Cybertruck is capable of towing 12,000 pounds and can haul a payload of 2,500 pounds. It has a 6.5-foot-long bed, shielded by a retracting power tonneau cover. Like every other Tesla currently produced, Cybertruck includes a camera array surrounding the truck that enables the Autopilot driver-assistance system. A basic lane-keeping version of Autopilot is included in the truck's base price, while the Full Self-Driving option, currently in a public beta, is available as a $12,000 software package, unlockable prior to delivery or after it.
The Cybertruck is the first production stainless steel-clad passenger vehicle since the final DeLorean DMC-12 deliveries happened 40 years ago back in 1983. Like the DeLorean, the Cybertruck has no paint on its body, though Tesla appears set to offer official, Tesla-service-center-installed vinyl wraps to allow customers to customize their truck should they so desire. However, the stainless steel will require very little maintenance, as it does not need to be waxed, while bird droppings and tree sap are of virtually no threat to its corrosion-resistant finish.
The Cybertruck joins two other EV pickup trucks currently on the market: Rivian's R1T and Ford's F-150 Lightning. Chevrolet expects to launch a Silverado EV truck sometime in 2024.
