Flight Duty Period (FDP) Definition A period which commences when a flight or cabin crew member is required to report for duty that includes a flight or a series of flights and which finishes when the aircraft finally comes to rest and the engines are shut down at the end of the last flight on which he/she is a crew member. Source: ICAO Annex 6 - Opearation of aircraft Description The flight duty period (FDP) is a period of time during which a crew member performs various tasks and includes at least one flight. In addition to the ones during flights, an FDP includes those performed by the crew member that occur before a flight segment or between flight segments without a required intervening rest period. Examples such tasks include: deadhead transportation; training conducted in an aircraft or flight simulator; airport/standby reserve. In order to mitigate the risk of fatigue two types of limitations are defined: maximum duration of the FDP. This is intended to provide reasonable assurance that the crew member would not experience performance degradation due to fatigue. minimum duration of the rest period before an FDP. This is intended to ensure that the crew member starts the next FDP fully rested. The maximum duration of an FDP is defined in relevant local legislation, e.g. 14 CFR Part 117 in the USA and Regulation 83/2014 in the EU (see Further Reading below for details). While there are some differences between countries, some broad principles are followed: Maximum FDP duration is reduced when the number of flight segments is increased Maximum FDP duration is reduced when the FDP is expected to include night hours (e.g. starts before 5 a.m. or after 5 p.m.). Maximum FDP duration is reduced if the crew member is not acclimatised (i.e. their circadian biological clock is not yet synchronised to the time zone where they currently are)

Lived 1821 – 1890. James Croll linked climate change, our planet’s ice ages, and astronomy, proposing that climate change is caused by periodic changes in the amount of energy our planet receives from the sun. With little schooling and entirely self-taught in physics, celestial mechanics, and philosophy, he formulated his visionary ideas and began publishing them while working as a janitor. Croll said the solar energy reaching our planet’s southern and northern hemispheres varies, rising or falling depending on Earth’s location and orientation in space versus the sun. Our planet’s ice ages are caused by solar energy variations altering the trade winds, and hence the strength of ocean currents, such as the Gulf Stream, that carry warmth from tropical regions to polar regions. Croll also devised the concept of ice-albedo feedback. Prior to Croll’s work, Karl Schimper and Louis Agassiz claimed Earth had experienced ice ages in the past. They based their claim on evidence they found in rocks and landscapes. Their claims were disputed because they offered no convincing mechanism to explain the cause of ice ages. Croll provided this mechanism, lending credibility to the concept of ice ages. His theory was then forgotten until in the twentieth century Milutin Milankovic revived it in a mathematically more highly developed form.

Policy: Sets the ANSP organisation’s contingency planning policy, operational concept for contingency and establishes the requirements around which the detailed contingency plans will be built Plan: Plan demonstrates how the aims of the set of Requirements that have evolved from the Policy and Operational Concept will be achieved. It also outlines the strategies/actions and resources required. The products of this step are the contingency plan(s). Achievement: Achievement verifies that the detailed means for translating the plans into reality are effectively in place. It covers testing, exercising, maintaining and reviewing the various contingency plans and raising awareness of contingency within ANSPs. Execution and Assurance: This step corresponds to the Execution of the contingency plan. It includes also the monitoring and recording activities to be undertaken to enable the Promotion. Promotion: Contingency Planning Promotion ensures communication of the contingency culture, dissemination of lessons learnt and enables the continuous improvement of the process. The arrows forming the loop indicate that Assurance and Promotion follow the Execution of the Contingency Plan and they should ensure that the Contingency Plan(s) are reviewed and continually improved.
