Happy Holi everyone :)
About us
A selfless effort to Help DOCTORS Become Entrepreneurs. My name is Piyush Sanduja. I am a graduate of IIT Kharagpur & Indian School of Business. In my career spanning more than 14years now (esp. in Healthcare), I have come to the realisation that the caregivers (doctors) are the building block of every healthcare change that any person or organisation wants to bring. BUT the system in the current condition is NOT taking feedback from the same caregivers be it on the Business front or on the Technology or Innovation side. Hence, healthcare in India won’t reach bigger heights till the biggest stakeholder is ignored. My humble AIM is to selflessly HELP DOCTORS BECOME ENTREPRENEURS. To execute the same, I am starting this KNOWLEDGE portal/ community to share holistic knowledge on healthcare business & upcoming technologies (AI/ Medtech) with caregivers in order for them to lead deeper professional lives. AND this community will also take feedback from the Healthcare Professionals in order to BETTER the upcoming innovations. Eventually, it should all add up to better the PATIENT EXPERIENCE.

3-learnings from the story of a Dr. B S Ajaikumar (Founder of HealthCare Global (HCG)) who started his hospital chain from scratch & grew it to the valuation of Rs.7000Cr. 1. Stick to your niche and start small: Even though he had a big vision but He started with a small clinic by the name of Bangalore Institute of Oncology to provide Radiation Oncology. He kept it totally bootstrapped and didn't even registered A pvt. ltd. company for the 1st 17 years until he got an external funding. 2. Remove all FOMO and focus on finding a GAP in the market: This doctor established India's 1st Linear Accelerator after Running the clinic for 9 years and later brought in Cyberknife technology for Cancer Treatment hence Becoming a pioneer in Oncology. Today, if you want to establish yourself in Tier-1 city and You feel there is too much competition then Focus on finding a future technology to establish yourself as a pioneer. OR you can go to a tier-2 city and start from scratch just like this doctor did in Bangalore. 3. Stay Nimble and pivot with time: After staying bootstrapped for 17 years, He received funds from Premji Invest then Temasek and later Did his IPO as well to grow aggressively to 8 hospitals as hubs with 1300Beds and 24 cancer day-care centers as spokes with A total annual patient base of 50K+ and Rs.1000Cr revenue. But he had accrued a huge debt and Ran into losses despite huge revenues. He then raised another Rs.1100Cr from CVC and Started a 5years battle of bringing efficiency and profitability while fighting the waves of Covid. Eventually, He not only grew the revenues to Rs.2000Cr but also Achieved profitability of 3% along with providing An exit of 2.5X to CVC through KKR at a valuation of Rs.7000Cr. Let me know if it was helpful. Growth Story of MANKIND PHARMA LTD from Rs.5Cr to Rs.10,000Cr, along with its recent acquisition of Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited. But do you think having 16,000 field force could be detrimental in future where everything is going digital? #healthcare #healthtech #india #acquisition #merger #pharmaceuticals #growth #digital
Why did MANKIND PHARMA LTD acquire Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited (BSV) @7.9X Revenue at a huge ₹13,630Cr($1.64B), providing Advent International an EXIT of 2.8X in 4yrs only? 🕴As per Rajeev Juneja (VC|MD), Mankind was at a Revenue of: - ₹5Cr in 1995 - ₹50Cr in 2000 - ₹500Cr in 2005 - ₹1,000Cr in 2010 - ₹5,000Cr in 2015 & - ₹10,000Cr in 2024 And now, he is aiming for a ₹50,000Cr🚀scale in next 10years. For that, he needs to get into a position to command higher margins by targeting Super-Specialty Market (rare competition segment) 🎒 In Indian School of Business, we were taught about The Product Adoption Curve, as per which you need to start a new product/ business line before the existing one enters the MATURITY phase in order to stay competitive & relevant. ✅ That is what MANKIND PHARMA LTD has been doing since last 15yrs to transition from a Street Savvy OTC products to the big league of Specialty products. And this deal finally stamps Mankind's entry into the big leagues. ✨ Mankind 1st built India's biggest brands through its ✨ OTC products: Mankind, Prega News & Unwanted-72, then ventured into ✨ Chronic segment in 2004. This helped Mankind build its humongous ✨ Network of 16,000+field force & 13,000+ stockists. Then, Mankind started climbing the ladder by partnering with multinational brands on ROYALTY on SALES Agreements & leveraged its huge distribution network. It launched - ▶ Symbicort, an asthma inhaler with AstraZeneca ▶ Vonoprazan, a GERD med with the Japanese Takeda ▶ Neptaz, a heart failure treatment drug with Novartis Then in Mar'22, it acquired Panacea Biotec's (Sputnik Covid Vaccine) Formulation business in Indian & Nepal; hence started its Transplant & Oncology portfolio. This acquisition of Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited has helped it to - ✨Foray into super-specialty products relevant for the ✨Futuristic markets in Women's Health & Assisted Reproductive Therapy (ART) along with ✨Complex products in Critical Care & Emergency Med. I guess this hunger has kept the company ahead of its competition & ensured an EBIDTA margin of 24.7% even today. ➡ In the short-run, Mankind's network will help in the distribution of BSV's star products in the Women Health segment as that segment contributes 80% of BSV's FY24 sale; hence creating immediate synergies of ₹100-200Cr by FY26. ➡ For the long-run, MANKIND PHARMA LTD has the complex technology platform with BSV's R&D set-ups in India, Germany, Ukraine, Philippines & Malaysia; let's see how it uses it for future products. 😎 What do you think of this BHARAT-MANKIND match? SMS HOSPITAL Jaipur is the biggest hospital in India wrt the number of beds in a single Hospital, which is even more than a few big PRIVATE PAN-India Branded Hospitals. Amazing!! #healthcare #healthtech #india #hospital #hospitalbeds #private #public
Isn't it shocking that the TOP-15 Govt. Hospitals in India have 43,000 Beds > 2X the total beds in Apollo Hospitals & Manipal Hospitals combined?🤯 ➡ PS: Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore has been mistakenly considered as a Govt. Hospital. It is rather a private, Christian minority community-run medical college and hospital. ▪ Looking at just the top-15 public hospitals in totality ▫ changes perspective as to the might of the GOI's provisions. ▪ Even though the private hospitals 🏥 are growing shockingly amazingly but ▫ they can't match the size of public health even by 2030. 1. SMS HOSPITAL - 6,251 Beds 2. King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow - 4,500 Beds 4. GMCH MEDICAL - 3,214 Beds 5. AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi) - 3,194 Beds 6. @RGGGH Chennai - 3,000 Beds 7. Grant Medical College & Sir JJ Group Of Hospitals, Mumbai - 2,844 Beds 8. @IPGMER Kolkata - 2,500 Beds 9. GS Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai - 2,250 Beds 10. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Puducherry - 2,231 Beds 11. Lok Nayak Govt Hospital Delhi (LNJP) - 2,053 Beds 12. Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh - 1,960 Beds 13. Government Medical College & Hospital Nagpur - 1,886 Beds 14. Patna Medical College - 1,748 Beds 15. SGPGIMS Lucknow - 1,609 Beds 🕴What do you think of the public health infrastructure of India? And mind you, the budget to maintain and run these hospitals is separate from the ABPMJAY that helps the patients get treatments in private hospitals. So, we must give the credit where its due: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. 😲 How, in the God's name, do you run a 6000-Bed Hospital, at a single place? Do you know Bangladesh used to result in a Medical Tourism of ~$1.5B to India via Kolkata to all major hospitals in the South esp. Apollo Hospitals Manipal Hospitals (MHEPL)? Will the business remain the same in future? #healthcare #healthtech #india #bangladesh #kolkata #medicaltourism #hospitals #southindia #business #unrest #indiabangladesh
4,49,570 patients visited Indian Hospitals in/via Kolkata for treatments. With a conservative ATS of Rs.2.5Lac/case ($3013), the REVENUE of India-Bangladesh MEDICAL TOURISM is Rs.11,239Cr ($1.35B). Can we afford to lose this business due to a political turmoil? 🎾 You ask any doctor who runs a hospital, they'll brag about treating a patient who has come from outside India primarily for 3-reasons: 1️⃣ They are always CASH patients 2️⃣ They pay at least 20% PREMIUM 3️⃣ They always REFER more if treated satisfactorily And even though a 200-Bed hospital is clocking a revenue of 175Cr+ per year, the patients from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maldives, Sri Lanka etc. are always considered special. 💰 The cash that comes from these cases always helps offset the WORKING CAPITAL requirements of treating patients with govt. scheme insurances. Now lets look at how the whole Hospital industry is situated in Kolkata: ✨ Manipal Hospitals (<> Temasek) bought out one of the oldest hospitals AMRI Hospitals and added 1200beds at a huge premium of Rs.2.28Cr/Bed. (Refer: https://lnkd.in/g26Rh7RK) ✨ Manipal Hospitals also bought off Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata and added further 1200 beds to become the biggest brand PAN-India leaving Apollo Hospitals behind with a total of 10,700 Beds. (Refer: https://lnkd.in/gs5TC5Hp) You see the whole expansion strategy of Temasek has been to capture the medical tourism market that originates from Bangladesh. ✨ As soon as Manipal bought AMRI, Apollo Hospitals also invested Rs.100Cr to buy a 325-Bed under-constructed hospital property to increase its tally to 1000+ Beds in order to compete with Manipal that has >1500Beds in Kolkata. ✨ In FY23, Max Healthcare recorded a 22% growth in its international business. The point is Bangladesh becomes even more critically important if you look at the medical visas provided to other neighbouring countries in FY23: ▫ Myanmar: 3,019 ▫ Maldives: 1,645 ▫ Sri Lanka: 1,432 ▫ Pakistan: 76 🔴 Isn't it insignificant in comparison to Bangladesh. Now, if we consider the Travel, Stay, Food & Shopping expenses other than the Hospital expenses, the total business generated out of this medical tourism must be >$2.5B.🤯 💹 Can we afford to hamper it due to political unrest? If you ask any doctor, they'll emphatically say NO. I am sure the govt. is taking this turmoil seriously. 👨⚕️ What do you think? TOP-BrAnDeD Hospitals' REVENUEs. What do you think on this? #healthcare #healthtech #India #hospitals #revenue #brand
Even though Top-5 Hospitals in 🇮🇳 grew 17.2% YoY in Revenue in FY24 & the PE investments were also BULL-ish🐂 but why are the Healthtech investments still BEAR-rish🐻? 🔻Is it that the PE-funded Branded hospitals are busy in 🔻expanding their reach PAN-India but NOT that much in 🔻bringing AI in Healthcare and incorporating Healthtech 🔻at every step of Patient Experience? ➡ Have a look at some of the prominent names in Indian Hospital Industry: 1-Apollo Hospitals- Rs. 19,059Cr (14.7% YoY) 2-Fortis Healthcare- Rs. 6,892Cr (9.4% YoY) 3-Manipal Hospitals- Rs. 6,500Cr (41.3% YoY) 4-Max Healthcare- Rs. 5,406Cr (18.5% YoY) 5-Narayana Health- Rs. 5,018Cr (10.9% YoY) 6-Aster DM Healthcare- Rs. 3,698Cr 7-Medanta- Rs. 3,275Cr 8-KIMS Hospitals- Rs. 2,498Cr 9-HealthCare Global (HCG) - Rs. 1,912Cr 10-Rainbow Children's Hospitals- Rs. 1,236Cr 11-Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH)- Rs. 1,219Cr 12-Shalby Hospitals- Rs. 933Cr 13-Artemis Hospitals- Rs. 878Cr 14-Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals - Rs. 670Cr 15-Dr.Agarwal's Eye Hospital- Rs. 319Cr 16-Kauvery Hospital- Rs.177Cr 17-Lotus Eye Hospital and Institute- Rs.48Cr 18-Aashka Hospital- Rs.22Cr ➡ As far as Temasek is concerned: ✨ It bought an additional 41% from Manipal by pumping $2B, valuing it at Rs.40,000Cr. *Since then the revenue has jumped by 59% from Rs.4,600Cr to Rs.6,500Cr. ✨ It might buy 60% of HealthCare Global (HCG). ✨ Temasek also invested $80m in Dr.Agarwal's Eye Hospital as well. ✨ This $2B has allowed Manipal Hospitals to acquire Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata with 1400 beds spread across 11 hospitals in Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand & Assam. ✨ It also bought off 17% stake in Medanta from Punj Lloyd Limited. ➡ IHH Healthcare had acquired Gleneagles and bought 31% stake in Fortis Healthcare. ➡ Blackstone invested in KIMSHEALTH and bought 80% in it. ✨ Let me know your honest point of view on this infra expansion. Do you also think that reducing GST on Medicine sales and Health Insurances can lead to the REDUCTION in healthcare costs for the public in general. #healthcare #healthtech #india #medicine #healthinsurance #gst #health #patients
In FY24, GST collected on domestic Medicine sale & Health Insurance Premiums is ~Rs.32,000Cr which is funnily🟰the GST evaded by Infosys. I think if the govt. evades collecting this GST from the public, it can decrease the healthcare cost of getting a treatment. What do you think?
