Coming from an ancient lineage, the Indian Grey wolf holds a unique place in the evolutionary history of wolves. The wolf is categorised under “Schedule I” of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 as endangered. The Indian Grey wolf lives in the Savannah grasslands, village commons and agricultural land, often sharing space with people and livestock. With much of its habitat under threat, the survival of the Indian Grey wolf is on a slippery slope. To conserve the remaining population of our ancient wolves, we must conserve our Open Natural Ecosystems and foster co-existence with local communities. #WildlifeWeek2024 hashtag #notwastelands hashtag #OpenNaturalEcosystems hashtag #GrasslandGuardians hashtag #StripedHyena hashtag #BiodiversityMatters hashtag #SaveOurGrasslands hashtag #HyenaConservation hashtag #EcoHealth hashtag #ProtectOurHabitats hashtag #IndianWildlife hashtag #ConserveONE hashtag #HealthyEcosystems hashtag #WildlifeConservation hashtag #GrasslandsOfIndia

Open Natural Ecosystems serve as a crucial habitat for many critically endangered faunal species, including the Great Indian Bustard. These habitats are unfortunately neglected by mainstream conservation narratives and misunderstood as degraded ecosystems or barren lands. Once a contender to be our National bird, less than 150 Great Indian Bustards remain in the wild today. They were formerly found across the Indian Subcontinent, but they are now locally extinct in 90% of its original range. #WildlifeWeek2024 #notwastelands #OpenNaturalEcosystems #GrasslandGuardians #StripedHyena #BiodiversityMatters #SaveOurGrasslands #HyenaConservation #EcoHealth #ProtectOurHabitats #IndianWildlife #ConserveONE #HealthyEcosystems #WildlifeConservation #GrasslandsOfIndia

This wildlife week, we celebrate the denizens of the Open Natural Ecosystems, ONE. ONE’s are unique ecosystems that make up more than 10% of India’s geographical area. While African Savannahs are globally recognised as iconic wildlife habitats, ONEs in India are left out of conservation efforts. Found in dry and arid regions, the striped hyena lives mostly outside protected areas. A predator with an undeservingly bad reputation, the hyena feeds on rotting carcasses and helps check the spread of diseases. Hence, they are crucial to the health of the Grasslands. #WildlifeWeek2024 #notwastelands #OpenNaturalEcosystems #GrasslandGuardians #StripedHyena #BiodiversityMatters #SaveOurGrasslands #HyenaConservation #EcoHealth #ProtectOurHabitats #IndianWildlife #ConserveONE #HealthyEcosystems #WildlifeConservation #GrasslandsOfIndia

The Thar Desert in India, an important stopover area for migrating birds, is also prone to outbreaks of desert locusts, occurring unpredictably, often coinciding with their stopover time. We tracked nine tagged Montagu’s Harriers (Circus pygargus) for five years to determine if the duration of their stopover at the sites is influenced by the availability of the migratory locusts or other factors. As a part of a larger landscape initiative aimed at achieving human-wildlife coexistence in the Himalaya, this workshop will bring together stakeholders from diverse sectors who will share knowledge on status of human-wildlife conflict (HWC) and wildlife habitat connectivity in the Kangchenjunga Landscape and high altitude Tiger Landscape. The focus is to identify HWC hotspots and protected area linkages, including transboundary corridors and recommend actions for coexistence. The outputs of this workshop will contribute to the design of a larger programme to address these issues in the Himalaya.

The Savannah Grasslands of Maharashtra are essential for supporting diverse wildlife and sustaining local livelihoods. However, they continue to face significant challenges, such as degradation and loss of biodiversity. As part of our ongoing efforts through the Maharashtra Savanna Grassland Restoration Project, we have planted 75,000 grass saplings across Kendur village and the Mayureshwar Wildlife Sanctuary in Pune District in the first phase of restoration. Our work focuses on collaborating closely with local communities to promote sustainable practices and enhance livelihoods, creating benefits for both people and nature. Together, we are committed to restoring these critical habitats and building a sustainable future for the savanna grasslands! Supported by DCB Bank aiming to preserve these landscapes and empower communities as custodians of their environment. Afforestation is a problem because it aims to create a forest where none existed before. If an area doesn't naturally support trees, planting them won't bring water—it could actually worsen water stress. What we truly need is ecosystem-specific restoration." – Abi Tamim Vanak, Director - CPD, ATREE Let's focus on restoring ecosystems based on their natural needs, not imposing solutions that can harm more than help. Micro irrigation is often promoted for its water-saving benefits at the farm level, but its impact on larger water resources like aquifers or river basins can be limited. Sachin Tiwale from ATREE highlights that while it can improve efficiency on farms, the broader water-saving effects depend on how the conserved water is used.
