In the Kalvarayan Hills, we discovered two promising reservoir pairings, each capable of storing 1,500 GWh of energy. One lower reservoir has a decent percentage of unused land which could have a moderate impact on the local environment. Did you know that 80% of Indian cities exceed the permissible Air Quality Index (AQI) limit? The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends an AQI of 0-50 for good air quality. In contrast, many Indian cities consistently exceed 200. This gap between current levels and the ideal scenario underscores the urgent need for intervention. Air quality in India is compromised by several factors. Predominant causes for this are -  🚘Vehicular emissions (20 - 40%) 🏭Industrial pollution ( 20 - 30%) 🔥Biomass burning (15 - 25%) 🏗️Construction dust (10 - 15% ) ☘ Agricultural stubble burning (10 - 15%) Accurate emissions tracking is essential for developing targeted solutions and improving air quality. 🔋Our latest research has identified 311 reservoir pairings, capable of storing a staggering 14,159 GWh of energy in the Kalvarayan Hills of Tamil Nadu. This massive potential was discovered through The Australian National University 's global pumped hydro atlas, which analysed reservoirs for their energy capacity potential based on various factors. The identified pairings range in capacity from 1,500 GWh to 2 GWh, with certain overlapsacross different ranges. This data provides valuable insights into the untapped potential of pumped storage hydropower (PSH) in the unused lands of Kalvaryan hills and its role in integrating renewable energy sources into the grid. Our team members hosted two sessions at the ‘ESG Compliance National Level Training program’ for Financial Corporations by Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation TIIC and Council Of State Industrial Development and Investment Corporations Of India (COSIDICI). The sessions spoke about climate change and energy, equipping the participants with awareness and understanding of pertinent updates and issues in the fields, to support better decision making. Here are some highlights from the sessions: ‘Climate Change Regulations and Offsetting Ethics’ by Raghav Nandakumar Raghav started the first session of the day taking participants through a journey of understanding, highlighting the progression of climate related regulations from the first international climate negotiations to current regulatory and policy updates. This included a brief on the latest voluntary and regulatory offsetting mechanisms announced in India, providing insights on how states could benefit from participation. He also went on to talk about the ethical discussions around offsetting and how both buyers and suppliers can participate in improving the credibility of the carbon markets in India. ‘Rooftop Solar: The Right Way Forward’ by Frano D'Silva The session aimed at emphasizing the importance of rooftop solar in transitioning the industrial sector from conventional electricity sources to renewable energy. It began with an overview of the contribution of MSMEs to Tamil Nadu's gross state domestic product, followed by an update on the trends and current status of rooftop solar in India. Participants were informed about the challenges of installing rooftop solar, with a particular focus on financing options. Project financing, which relies on the project's cash flows rather than collateral, was proposed as an alternative to traditional collateral-based financing for rooftop solar projects. In the journey toward sustainability, emissions accounting and tracking is the crucial first step. Without a clear understanding of where emissions are coming from and how much is being generated, it’s impossible to set meaningful reduction targets or measure progress. Beyond NDCs, CBAM, and ESG frameworks, there are several incentives driving businesses to take this vital step: 🔸 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): Corporates play a crucial role in helping countries meet their NDC targets under the Paris Agreement. Accurate emissions tracking is essential for regulatory compliance, maintaining market access, and fostering innovation in low-carbon technologies. 🔸 Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): Companies exporting to the EU must account for the carbon footprint of their products. Rigorous emissions accounting is necessary to avoid additional costs at the border and to strategically align with global carbon pricing trends. 🔸 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG): Emissions tracking is central to improving ESG scores, attracting sustainability-focused investors, and managing environmental risks. Transparent emissions reporting builds trust with stakeholders and strengthens a company’s market position. Additionally, Carbon Pricing Mechanisms, Corporate Disclosure Regulations, and Supply Chain Pressures further incentivize emissions accounting, making it not just a regulatory requirement but a business imperative.
