Securing livelihoods for marginalised communities across India

About us

Axis Bank Foundation focusses on working with vulnerable rural communities, helping them secure stable and sustainable livelihoods. To create economic opportunities for small and marginal farmers and landless rural citizens, we set in place systems that enhance their income from agri and agri-allied work, natural resource management, livestock and via linkages for finance and to markets. We also look into providing vocational skills for able and disabled unemployed youth in urban and rural India. We work with our extensive network of NGO-partners to design programmes and interventions specific to the community’s requirements. Our vision is to reach out to the most marginalised communities and create sustainable socio-economic impact in their lives. We aim to impact two million households by 2025.

Water security is essential for the well-being of rural communities, ensuring access to safe and sufficient water for drinking, agriculture, and sanitation. This is vital for the region's health, food security, and economic development. As climate change and water scarcity challenges intensify, adopting effective water management practices that enhance natural capital is crucial for building resilience. Our Sustainable Livelihood Programme, in partnership with Gram Vikas, is actively addressing water security challenges in Odisha. The programme strengthens water security through capacity building, participatory planning, and reinforcing community institutions and infrastructure. Through the Sustainable Livelihood Programme, Gram Vikas recently explored an innovative way to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness through wall paintings. These artworks, displayed across 12 villages in the Daringbada block, highlight the importance of rainwater harvesting, efficient irrigation practices, and maintaining clean water sources. They are more than just art—they are powerful tools for storytelling and spreading vital information, serving as visual reminders to enhance water security through community efforts. Empowering rural youth with skills, mentoring, and opportunities to enhance their livelihoods is important for community development. This International Youth Day, we celebrate the milestones of a young agri entrepreneur from Ahmednagar who, after receiving training as part of our programme partnership with The Agri-Entrepreneur Growth Foundation (AEGF), is actively working with his farming community to elevate their livelihoods. These young entrepreneurs showcase new agricultural technologies and practices to local farmers, boosting crop productivity, improving livelihoods, and inspiring others to explore new opportunities. As part of the Sustainable Livelihood Programme, we are committed to collective efforts in creating relevant skill development opportunities for rural, semi-urban, and urban youth across India with trade-specific and soft skills. This helps them integrate into structured work environments and offers comprehensive assistance to first-time job seekers, aspiring entrepreneurs, and youth with disabilities. #InternationalYouthDay2024 #SkillDevelopment #Youth

The Women Who Whispered Change to the Earth 🌱👩🌾 In Maharashtra’s Garkhindi village of Ahmednagar district, a group of ten women dared to dream of a greener, healthier future for their community. Tired of the limitations and environmental concerns associated with traditional farming methods, they sought a way to empower themselves and their fellow villagers. Their journey began with the Sustainable Livelihood Development Programme, by the Axis Bank Foundation, and implemented by WOTR in the region. Through this project, the women, united under the banner of the ‘Shri Shakti Swayam Sahayyata Mahila Samuh’ SHG, received training at a Farmer Field School. There, they unlocked the secrets of preparing organic bio-pesticides and other natural formulations capable of revitalising the soil and shielding crops from harm. Armed with newfound knowledge and a shared vision, they set up their production unit, a 200-litre drum becoming the heart of their operation. Each batch of organic formulations required 30 days of careful preparation, a testament to their dedication and patience. Their efforts soon bore fruit. Three successful production cycles yielded 350 litres of Dashparni Ark, a potent bio-pesticide derived from leaf extracts. News of their eco-friendly solution spread like wildfire, and 108 farmers, both from Garkhindi and neighbouring villages, eagerly purchased the formulation at Rs 25 per litre. The impact of their initiative extended far beyond immediate financial gains. It ignited a spark of change, inspiring a shift towards sustainable agriculture in the region. As they planned to expand their production, their work promised to create a ripple effect, leading to healthier soil, a greener village, and a more balanced ecosystem for generations to come. Anita Rajaram Zinjhad, a proud member of the SHG, expressed the sentiment shared by her fellow women. "Being part of this project fills me with pride," she declared. "It allows us to take small but meaningful steps towards making our village greener and our soil healthier. Together, we are creating a better future for our community." 👇👇👇 When you engage with our posts, you're not just showing support - you're amplifying our voice! 📢 Every like, share, and comment helps our message reach more people who care, helping us tackle rural poverty at its very core 🌳 👍 Like if you support our cause, 💬 Comment to share your thoughts, ➜ Share to spread the word! #SustainableAgriculture #WomenEmpowerment #OrganicFarming #RuralDevelopment #EcoFriendly #CommunityInitiative #SHG #GreenFuture #FarmersFirst #SustainableLivelihood #WOTR4Development #WOTRat30

Since 2011, we have been working with Samaj Pragati Sahayog to implement the Sustainable Livelihood Programme in pockets of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Our collective work has been strengthening economic security among the rural communities of the region. While data quantifies the progress, it is stories of people like Pushpabai that capture the essence of what we do in making community members self-reliant. Pushpabai’s journey highlights her enhanced leadership skills, and improved decision-making capabilities in becoming financially secure while also boosting her community’s confidence in identifying new livelihood opportunities. Such meaningful stories make the impact of our work with partners across the country even more special. #SustainableLivelihoodProgramme #RuralDevelopment #CommunityDevelopment #WomenRoleModel #WomenLeadership #WomenEmpowerment

Just as we require skills and capacity training to advance in our careers, rural communities in India also need access to knowledge and training to diversify and enhance their income sources. Diversifying economic activities strengthens the resilience and stability of livelihoods, especially among vulnerable rural communities. A multiple-income or basket of livelihood approach fosters economic stability and well-being. The economic, social, and ecological impacts of this approach can be observed at national, regional, and household levels. Our Sustainable Livelihood Programme introduces rural communities to the basket of livelihood approach. #SustainableLivelihoodProgramme #EconomicStability #LivelihoodDiversification #BasketofLivelihood

Rural livelihood is generally synonymous with farm-based livelihood. However, the surrounding conditions and the aspirations of youth from rural communities often urge them to seek diverse career paths alongside agriculture. Understanding and addressing the varied livelihood aspirations of rural communities is vital for the inclusive development of a community. On World Youth Skills Day, we celebrate the potential of young people and emphasize the importance of equipping them with employable skills that make them future-ready. At Axis Bank Foundation, the Sustainable Livelihood Programme bridges this gap through: 🗺️ Comprehensive Guidance: First-time job seekers receive robust support and community networks, fostering confidence and adaptability. 📈 Entrepreneurial Training: Aspiring entrepreneurs gain specialized training in business planning, market insights, and financial management, empowering them to establish and grow micro-enterprises. 🌟 Enterprise Development: The Enterprise Development Programme supports rural artisans and entrepreneurs, driving economic growth. The programme prioritizes tailored support for Persons with Disabilities through customized training modules, sensitization workshops with employers, and career counseling, ensuring equal opportunities for career advancement. The Kharif season has started, a crucial time for farmers in India as they begin sowing various crops with the arrival of the monsoon. Ensuring a successful Kharif season involves reducing production costs, boosting productivity, and maximizing price realization. This balance is key to the viability of agriculture in rural communities. Agricultural productivity hinges on soil quality, high-quality seeds and fertilizers, knowledge of best farming practices, and timely credit access. Financial viability depends on the cost of inputs, credit, labor, and market prices. Through our Sustainable Livelihood Programme, farmers are encouraged to find efficient solutions like buying seeds and fertilizers in bulk to save money, using scientific farming methods, and pooling their produce through Farmer Producer Groups to get better market prices. Our projects are co-designed with communities, starting with an in-depth understanding of local challenges, opportunities, and aspirations. Here’s wishing a successful Kharif Cropping season to our communities. #KharifSeason #AgriculturalProductivity #RuralCommunities #SustainableLivelihoodProgramme #CommunityDevelopment
