Education has been an important part of my journey. Over the years, I’ve worked with various clients and thought leaders in the education sector on transformative projects. I have also been lucky to serve as an adjunct faculty at leading business schools in India and Europe, on campus, online, and hybrid. This experience has helped me reflect deeply on the future of business education. I’m truly honored to be invited by Himanshu Chauhan (PhD) to the Disrupt or Be Disrupted event, organized by the UPES School of Business in collaboration with BW Businessworld. The topic, Envisioning the Next Era of Business Education, resonates deeply with me. Working in consulting doesn't need to feel like a 24x7 tooth extraction (minus anaesthesia) A lot gets said about consulting firm culture (or the lack of it) but is it really necessary or even beneficial to put your people through misery in the quest for results? Consulting is about solving client problems and helping them succeed, right? But if you're perpetually stressed and in mental pain, can you ever do justice to the job (and to the client)? Luckily, not all consulting firms do this. And I'm kinda proud of Saurabh Uboweja for building BOD Consulting this way. Clients are vital, but so is employee wellbeing. And no, this isn't a hiring pitch or something. I'm just sharing what I've seen as part of the company's culture that any leader can learn from: 1. Everyone, yes I mean everyone has a voice. Our junior associates are not meant only to flip slides while someone with grey hair talks. If you're in a meeting, you're expected to contribute. It doesn't matter if something lands wrong, we'll fix it. 2. People are respected for being people, not just job titles. With a large GenZ workforce, it would be utterly stupid to operate in a hierarchical and siloed manner. 3. Keeping the client at the center of all that we do. Saurabh encourages courageous conversations and across levels, people focus on what is meaningful for the client. The firm exists to help clients and not to give them templatized responses or 'cookie cutter' solutions. And this is why clients come back with rich praise and success stories. (They often also bring other future clients, which makes it easier to sell) 4. The Power of Humility. Being humble doesn't mean being meek or cowardly, it indicates higher confidence and being more secure with yourself. Incidentally, The Power of Humility is also the title of a book by Dr PV Ramana Murthy, one of the leaders at BOD and a lot of what's in the book is practiced in the firm. There's no deferment of leave till theres a 'quiet period'. YOU know when you need leave. Go ahead and take it. There's no pushing WFH at sick people. If someone is unwell, they'd better be resting instead of agonizing over a deliverable. ‐‐----------------------------------------------- None of this is rocket science. (And even if something is rocket science, it is very much doable.
