Workplace anxiety is more prevalent than we might realize, silently affecting many around us. Recognizing the signs can help us support our colleagues better. Anxiety in the workplace can manifest in various ways. You might notice someone frequently complaining about headaches, fatigue, or muscle tension. They may also exhibit subtle signs like restless leg syndrome, nail-biting, or other repetitive behaviors such as constantly fidgeting, tapping their fingers, or playing with their hair. You might see them pacing, grinding their teeth, or repeatedly checking their phone or email. Emotionally, they might seem irritable, moody, or generally uneasy, often displaying a heightened sense of worry or agitation. They could be easily startled, overly sensitive to criticism, or unusually quiet and withdrawn. Behaviorally, they might avoid tasks, struggle with productivity, or aim for unrealistic perfection, sometimes staying late or coming in early to redo tasks they feel aren't good enough. You might notice them isolating themselves, missing deadlines, or hesitating to participate in meetings or group activities. Creating a supportive environment starts with encouraging open conversations about mental health. Pay attention to your colleagues' behavior and create an atmosphere where they feel safe sharing their struggles without judgment. Show empathy by offering a listening ear and understanding their challenges. If you notice a colleague struggling, offer your support. Simple actions like helping with tasks, encouraging breaks, and promoting a healthy work-life balance can alleviate anxiety. Sometimes, suggesting professional help can be the best way forward.
