Breakthrough makes gender-based violence unacceptable by transforming the culture that permits violence. We work with 1.5 million adolescents in schools and communities to mould gender norms and beliefs before they solidify into behaviour. As we build their capacity by fostering aspiration, leadership, agency and negotiation skills, we enable a generational shift towards a gender-equal culture.

It is not every day that a girl gets to stand for her aspirations—Neeru is determined to change that. When a 20-year-old Neeru found that girls in her village in Kutail, 12 kilometres from Karnal in Haryana, are being pulled out of school to be married off, she conducted a door-to-door survey which revealed that 45 girls have dropped out. But equipped with the lessons she has gained from the Breakthrough sessions she has been attending, Neeru was able to take a stand for her higher education as well as extend her hopes of a better tomorrow towards other girls in her community. Neeru made this happen through one-on-one conversations with the parents in the community. Thanks to her efforts, 17 families have been convinced to allow their daughters to return to school or college! Neeru did not stop at that. She approached the Panchayat and successfully reopened the local library, transforming it into a hub for discussions on gender issues. She screened inspiring films like Laapata Ladies and spoke about the importance of education and delaying early marriage with girls and their parents. We are proud of incredible Team Change Leaders like Neeru who, inspired by our sessions, rise out of intervention areas with the help of supporters like British Asian Trust and BT Group, empowering them to assertively negotiate for a gender-just future not just for themselves but also for the generations to come. #SochBadlegi #TeamChangeLeaders

🤔 We all talk about a gender equitable future, but how feasible is it, really? 📚 Interesting school-based activities that encourage students to critically engage with gender, as part of a comprehensive curriculum on gender sensitivity, is a brilliant step in that direction! That’s were Taaron Ki Toli comes in. Taaron Ki Toli or Legion Of Stars , Breakthroughs school-based curriculum on gender equity, attempts to improve young people's critical understanding of gender norms and shift mindsets for a gender equal future. Having successfully implemented in Haryana, we have scaled up to partner with Odisha and Punjab state governments to integrate the curriculum into the states' public schools. 🎉We are so grateful to leaders such as Kathi Hanifnia and the others at the Global Innovation Fund for believing in and supporting the work we do. #GenderEquity #TaaronKiToli
Back to School! This week our colleagues Joseph Ssentongo and Kathi Hanifnia are in #India, with our partners from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Sida, visiting four GIF #investments. Today they’ve been in Chandigarh, meeting the team at Breakthrough Trust and officials from the Punjab State Government. Breakthrough’s innovation, Taaron ki Toli (TKT) is an evidence-based #gender-equality curriculum for 11–14-year-old girls and boys which aims to change gender attitudes, aspirations and behaviours to shift gender norms. The delegation saw the curriculum being delivered in classrooms. Breakthrough is a great example of how GIF #derisks innovations and helps them #scale. Our grant initially helped Breakthrough scale TKT across 4,500 government schools in Punjab. However, with the support of state governments in both in Punjab and Odisha, the gender equality curriculum has now been integrated within the state education systems and rolled out to all public schools. It already reaches over 334,000 young people and is on track to reach 4 million.
