Verra, backed by Amazon and others, has launched the new "Abacus" label for afforestation and reforestation (AR) projects, specifically those focusing on agroforestry and restoration. The label layers additional requirements onto Verra's VM0047 methodology with an aim to enhance transparency and accountability. The below image indicates Calyx Global's GHG rating distribution for AR projects. As shown here, these projects can exhibit a wide range of GHG integrity. While the VM0047 methodology requires dynamic baselines with well-matched control plots to ensure additionality – a potentially important improvement over past methodologies. The Abacus label adds to that by assuming 100% leakage if food or commodities were produced in the baseline scenario, requiring direct carbon stock measurements that are publicly available and limiting carbon credit sales to the first 30 years of a 40-year crediting period.
