Leading with Gratitude: Shifting the Focus from Perfection to Appreciation Leaders are hired to better the best. Today’s organisations are so driven by data and numbers that leaders often face the daunting challenge of constantly pushing towards perfection. Better top line, better EBITDA, better bottom line, better EPS, better employee satisfaction, better NPS, better this and better that. Add to this mix the challenge of alliances and alignments in work environments which are competitive and rather ruthless. Changing teams, changing roles, new reporting managers, new locations, constantly evolving strategies and a changing world make it even more exhausting. Leaders are hired to create perfection albeit only for a fleeting period of time. These temporary achievements are recognised by the awards and accolades that appear on social media streams around certain calendar months. And then it is back to “raising the bar” and “pushing the envelope”. It is back to driving, motivating, inspiring to set new records. That fact is that as long as there are humans, there will be imperfections. And while we as leaders will continue to keep pushing for perfection, can we enjoy the journey by easing off a bit of the pressure. Perhaps the attitude of gratitude that we use in our personal lives to find joy and contentment is what we need at the workplace. Can we sit in a leadership meeting and share what we are grateful for in the workplace? Or perhaps sit with our teams and express all the things that we are grateful to them for?
