  • Dr Soumitra Pathare, Director at CMHLP, recently participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Asia Society India Center on the pressing issue of “Equal Policies of Care: Mental Health and the Workplace.” The panel was held to observe World Mental Health Day 2024 and touch on it’s theme of ‘Mental Health at Work.’   Our program director and senior research fellow, Arjun Kapoor, moderated the event and highlighted a key challenge: “Often, our conversations around workplace mental health are limited to corporate and white-collar jobs. However, more than 90% of the Indian workforce comprises informal workers. Data from the NCRB shows that in 2022, 26.45% of suicide deaths were among daily wage earners, the highest across professions.”   The discussion further emphasized the need to extend mental health policies beyond corporate settings to include India’s large, unorganized workforce. #mentalhealthatworkplace #mentalhealthandinformalworkforce #informalworkers #mentalhealth #WMHD

  • 🎉 Announcing the winner of the #ProjectSIREN Award for Journalists, 2024. Azeefa Fathima, Senior Reporter at The News Minute, for their article: “More teens are dying by suicide every year. How do we protect them?” 🔶 In appreciation, jury member, Tanmoy Goswami, noted "When newsrooms report on suicide, they often neglect the critical idea of prevention. This makes suicides seem like fait accompli, leaving readers feeling hopeless and helpless. Azeefa Fathima's article empowers parents with actionable advice and insights that can help protect the mental health of their children. A timely, well-researched, accessible piece that everyone should read."  🔶 Jaya Shreedhar admired Azeefa’s sensitive and compelling exploration of suicide prevention among young people stating the piece stands out for actionable information it offers audiences and shines as an example of solutions journalism.  🔶 Mr A J Philip neatly summarised that at its core “The report exemplifies how sensitive issues can be handled with empathy, fostering awareness while promoting actionable, life-saving solutions. It is a well-deserved recipient of the SIREN Award, recognised for its thoughtful, life-affirming contribution to public understanding of how suicides can be prevented.” ↗ Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/eEyifU-E

  • ❇ Outlive conducted a four-day workshop for its Youth Advocacy for Suicide Prevention (YASP) fellowship from May 3-5, 2024. Outlive’s YASP Fellowship trains and mentors youth advocates to engage with policy makers to drive systemic change for youth suicide prevention. Our second cohort of nine Fellows participated in this immersive experience to acquire skills, influence policy processes, and learned to conduct community needs assessments to explore community issues.   ➡ On Day 1, the Fellows delved into a rights-based approach to suicide prevention, explored systemic mental health challenges, and learned about the policy cycle using the National Mental Health Policy as a case study. It was an enriching start filled with insights and engaged participation!   ➡ Day 2, focused on citizen participation in policy processes, guided by Fields of View Fields of View's comic book on the 74th Amendment Act. The Fellows discovered the role of Urban Local Bodies in mental health and strategized ways to improve community well-being through evidence-based solutions. Engaging activities deepened their understanding and sparked actionable ideas for suicide prevention.   ➡ On Day 3, the workshop explored engagement, policy initiatives, and advocacy tools. The Fellows tackled a policy program case, identified gaps, and crafted questionnaires to drive community conversations on suicide prevention. They engaged with the policy cycle and played "Ondu Kathe Keli (OKK),” a storytelling game where they shared challenges and strengths.   ➡ Day 4 was a journey of self-reflection and visioning. The Fellows expressed their experiences and strengths through creative outlets, showcasing personal growth and resilience. They conducted community needs assessments and wrapped up with reflections, learnings, and feedback. We are excited to highlight their next steps!
